That's pretty much where I am with this whole thing. I would love to see the Land brought to life in all its glory, but I've seen way too many good books get totally butchered in the process... and this isn't an easy book to make into a film, so I'm doubly worried.

So what is the only thing that TC has that no one else in the Land has? What power could he wield from a source that is distinct only to him?
His leprosy.
The wild magic can be found in his veins where the dormant remains of his leprosy remain. Of course, this would take some re-writing to get all of the loose ends to fit in the story that this would create, but the ring could still remain a symbol of his failed marriage...and not be needed as a token of power.
His blood could eventually be the alloy that is impure. After all, TC is the wild magic. What other person could be what he is in the Land? Apparently leprosy is not a disease that is found in the Land.
And to control the wild magic, one must control Covenant, so the need for Foul to win him over to 'the dark side' becomes even more paramount.
Just an idea...

I don't quite agree with that idea ... but I wanted to commend you for thinking about it in the way I had hoped someone would. So Good Post!
What I'm not sure about is that your idea becomes 'leprosy is really a super-power' ... seems someone distasteful, and I must assume it's offensive to people who have life-threatening conditions like leprosy.

When we start getting concerned about movies having 'distasteful' content involved in the story lines revolving around the main characters, then we open up a whole new realm of issues and concerns. There are far too many examples to try and give to justify that particular point.
I am more than quite sure that there are far more rape victims who would be offended by the main character than there are people afflicted with leprosy.
Leprosy is a disease. It is not pretty. No matter what context that it is portrayed to be in, it will still be what it is. It cannot be romanticized, cannot be toned down, and cannot be ignored.
