Admittedly I do not listen to lyrics. Of course I hear them, but I have never focused on lyrics in a song unless they somehow stand out to me. The actual music is what I like: the instruments and how the vocals go over them. Admittedly I also like instrumentals (especially in rock, but alas, few bands still do this).

I have King Crimson's latest studio release on "The Power to Believe" and I have alawys cracked up (laughing) at this one song. Iti s loud and rough and hilarious. Take a look (and a listen if you can):
"Happy With What You Have To Be Happy With"

And when I have some words
This is the way I'll sing
Through a distortion box
To make them menacing

Yeah, then I'm gonna have to write a chorus
We're gonna need to have a chorus
And this seems to be as good as any other place to sing it till I'm blue in the face

And for a second verse
Of terse economy
I'll brew another pot
Of ambiguity

Then I'm gonna have to write a chorus
We're gonna need to have a chorus
And this seems to be as good as any other place to sing it till I'm blue in the face
Yes, we're gonna need to have a chorus
I'm gonna have to write a chorus
And this seems to be as good as any other place to sing it till I'm blue in the face

Happy with what you have to be happy with
you have to be happy with what you have
to be happy with you have to be happy with what you have,
happy with what you have to be happy with
you have to be happy with what you have
to be happy with what you have you have to be happy with what you have to happy with

Then I guess I'll repeat the chorus!
We're gonna repeat the chorus!
I guess I'll repeat the chorus!
We're gonna repeat the chorus!
Then I guess I'll repeat the chorus!
We're gonna repeat the chorus!
I guess I'll repeat the chorus!
We're gonna repeat the chorus!

Happy with what you have to be happy with
you have to be happy with what you have
to be happy with you have to be happy with what you have,
happy with what you have to be happy with
you have to be happy with what you have
to be happy with what you have you have to be happy with what you have to happy with

australians all let us rejoice
for we are young and free
we've golden soil and wealth for toil
our home is girt by sea
our land abounds in natures gifts
of beauty rich and rare
in history's pages let every stage
advance australia fair
in joyful strains then let us sing
advance australia fair
beneath our radiant southern cross
we'll toil with hearts and hands
to make this common wealth of ours
renowned of all the lands
for those who've come across the seas
we've boundless plains to share
with courage let us all combine
to advance australia fair
in joyful strain then let us sing
advance australia fair
some might find it cheesy but these lyrics specifically make me proud to be from the most beautiful country in the world.

oh yes...serious Crimson fan. the first time i heard Crimson was in the cellar studio of my husband's band in 1977!! his band was doing Crimson!! The Power to Believe is my most current favorite, but i also love Red, In the Wake of Posidon, Lizard, Starless and Bible Black, etc.

This Mortal Coil - I must have been blind

Here I am believin' words again
Here I am tryin' to find your love again
Here I am down on my knees again
Prayin' for a love that we used to know
Both of us know how hard it is to love and let it go
Both of us know how hard it is to go on living that way
When so few understand what it means to fall in love
And so few know how hard it is to live without it
Lord I must have been blind, oh, I must have been blind
Lord, I must have been blind

Ah, to hold something real, and not believe it
To live in her life, and never trust it
To give all you know and never feel it
To hold back each day until it dies away
Both of us know how hard it is to love and let it go
And both of us know how hard it is to go on living that way
When so few understand what it means to fall in love
And so few know how hard it is to live without it
Lord, I must have been blind, I must have been blind
Lord, I must have been blind, Yes, I must have been blind

Well I was a lad in the fishing town
An old man said to me
You can spend your life, your jolly life just sailing on the seas
You can search the world fro pretty girls till your eyes are weak and dim
But don’t go searching for a mermaid son if you don’t know how to swim

Cause her hair was green as seaweed
Her skin was blue and pale
Her face it was a work of art
I love that girl with all my heart
But I only liked the upper part
I did not like the tail

So I signed on to a whaling ship
My first very day at sea
I seen a mermaid in the waves
Reaching out to me
Come live with me in the sea she said
Down on the ocean floor
I’ll show you a million wondrous things that you never seen before

So over I jumped and she pulled me down
Down to her seaweed bed
And a pillow made of a turtle shell she placed beneath my head
She fed me shrimp and caviar upon a silver dish
From her head to her waist it was just my taste
But the rest of her was a fish

Cause her hair was green as seaweed
Her skin was blue and pale
Her face it was a work of art
I love that girl with all my heart
I only liked the upper part
I did not like the tail

But then one day she swam away
So I sang to the clams and the whales
Oh how I miss her seaweed hair
And the silver shine of her scales
But then her sister she swam by
And set my heart awhirl
Cause her upper part was an ugly fish
But her bottom part was a girl

Yes her hair is green as seaweed
Her skin is blue and pale
Her legs they are a work of art
I love that girl with all my heart
I don’t give a damn about the upper part
Cause that’s how I get my TAIL

"Airbag", by Radiohead

In the next world war
In a jackknifed juggernaut
I am born again

In the neon sign
Scrolling up and down
I am born again

In an interstellar burst
I am back to save the universe

In a deep deep sleep of the innocent
I am born again

In a fast german car
I'm amazed that I survived
An airbag saved my life

In an interstellar burst
I am back to save the universe

In an interstellar burst
I am back to save the universe
What an opening to Radiohead's 1997 album! No wonder many proclaimed them the inheritors of the new modern music. Of course, maybe they're not, but it's a lovely thought (for us budding fans).

Anyway, the lyrics: I think there's a lot to do with rebirth, obviously. There seems to be an enthusiasm of sorts. Thom represents life as something delicate that is bound up in advancing technology (bombs, cars). Man's identity is bound up with his technology. I especially like the line: "In the neon sign/Scrolling up and down/I am born again".

HA! i just HAPPEN to be wearing my Radiohead shirt today!
Got it at Shoreline at the Kid A/Amnesiac show!! two albums i DIDN'T care for until i heard them live!!!

and the next song on OK Computer after Airbag (they opened the concerts on this tour with Airbag too, LF!! )

Paranoid Android

Please could you stop the noise, I'm trying to get some rest
From all the unborn chicken voices in my head
What's that...? (I may be paranoid, but not an android)
What's that...? (I may be paranoid, but not an android)

When I am king, you will be first against the wall
With your opinion which is of no consequence at all
What's that...? (I may be paranoid, but no android)
What's that...? (I may be paranoid, but no android)

Ambition makes you look pretty ugly
Kicking and squealing gucci little piggy
You don't remember
You don't remember
Why don't you remember my name?
Off with his head, man
Off with his head, man
Why don't you remember my name?
I guess he does....

Rain down, rain down
Come on rain down on me
From a great height
From a great height... height...
Rain down, rain down
Come on rain down on me
From a great height
From a great height... height...
Rain down, rain down
Come on rain down on me

That's it, sir
You're leaving
The crackle of pigskin
The dust and the screaming
The yuppies networking
The panic, the vomit
The panic, the vomit
God loves his children, God loves his children, yeah!

Just seems to be where I've been stuck lately.....

Beaucoup Disarray

I lost my keys again, seems they're gone for good this time
I can't return your call, think somebody cut my line.
My laundry lives and breathes, talked to me just yesterday.
Sending out an APB cause I'm lost in beaucoup disarray
Sending out an APB cause I'm lost in beaucoup disarray.

My trash won't separate, my calendar is nonchalant,
They cut my plastic up down at my favorite restaruant.
Last night I dreamed that tomorrow was a brand new day
Woke up to find myself right here with beaucoup disarray
Woke up to find myself right here with beaucoup disarray.

Oops, I tripped and fell again, happens all the time
Hello indecision, I just can't make up my mind.
Those ins and outs, up and downs, every little which away
It seem's I'll just get used to time in beaucoup disarray.
Oh, disarray.

My bowl needs changing and my goldfish tried to kill me twice
Went to my shrink to try to get some birds-eye view advice.
He said he was not sure, asked me if I felt okay.
He said five hundred dollars boy, you're lost in beaucoup disarray
Five hundred dollars boy, you're lost in beaucoup disarray.

I think I need to find my list that tells me what I've got to do
Guess I'm gonna be late again and I know how much that bothers you
It ain't my fault you see, so many things got in my way
Chaos in paradise, lost in beaucoup disarray
Chaos in paradise, lost in beaucoup disarray.

Oops, I tripped and fell again, happens all the time.
Hello indecision, I just can't make up my mind.
Those ins and outs, ups and downs, every little which away.
Seems I'll just get used to time in beaucoup disarray.
Oh, disarray, Disarray. Yeah, yeah, disarray.
