I think Al was definitely a villian in the first season and part of Season 2, but after Hurst came to town, Al's villiany was eclipsed by a bigger bad guy (Hurst.)
For me, Season 3 was the best.

i must be weird. i always liked him. but i think a lot of bad guys are extremely likable personalities.
but i'm pretty sure, thinking back on it, it was his illness that "humanized" him for me.
