The songs were lyrically directly (almost) from the book...the Old version changed them quite a bit.

I finally watched this one recently. In plot, it did seem a lot closer to the book than the older version.

I'm not sure that the "flash back" sequences of Wonka's past really added anything to the story, though. On the other hand, seeing Count Duku/Saruman as a dentist was worth more than a few giggles.
