Wow. Dare I say it... dare it be whispered? Well really, I (when no one is around), listen to a whole host of truly bad music from the 70's and 80's. But my greatest closet shame is listening to a cat named Benny Mardones, best known for the big 1980 hit "Into the Night".

Oh come now LF - confession is good for the soul. We all know you listen to Barbara Streisand.

Hold on here. I'm not ashamed of listening to ABBA. I have all the recent remastered reissues of their albums on CD, and they sound fabulous, thank you very much. Why should I and other ABBA fans (I know Infelice is another) be made to feel guilty over the band, just because Vespers is dominated by the musical culture of hard and progressive rock-minded folk? I stand by all the music I have in my collection. But for the sake of this discussion, I'll rummage through my stuff and see if there's anything I'm ashamed of that I still listen to, using Edge's criteria. There is certainly stuff hiding in my closet that I'm quite ashamed of that I never listen to anymore:

KISS.

Hell, I'm too ashamed to even bring those KISS LPs to a second-hand shop to sell them off. One of these days, I'm going to have to wrap them up in black garbage bags and dispose of them in a trash can in some dark alley...

Because Vespers is dominated by the musical culture of hard and progressive rock-minded folk? Kidding aside, I personally have no problem with ABBA. I find them kind of infectious, but I also find them too slick for my discophobic tastes.

I suppose there is one thing that might be considered a guilty pleasure. Mind you, I don't feel guilty about it, but still.

I own William Shatner's latest album, Has Been, which I (and most who bought it, including our man dAN) found surprisingly good.

I also own Days of Future Passed, by the Moody Blues. Yeah, you may be wondering how they could be a guilty pleasure, but they look embarrassingly shallow--a light snack--next to King Crimson. At least to me.

They were one of the pioneering techno/dance acts of the '80s and have put out some very hypnotic, melodic and brilliantly arranged albums in their time. Introspective and Very are classics of their kind.

By the way, dlb, I thought Manilow's Copacabana was a neat song. Very catchy. I didn't think Manilow was awful; but then, I've never listened to any of his records, so I don't know if he deserved his reputation as Mr. Bland.

Honestly, I can't think of anything in my collection that I'd be ashamed of. The Bloodhound Gang, maybe? Not really.

Last year some I traveled with some friends to Palm Springs, California. When we got into our hotel rooms, we couldn't help but notice an outdoor concert on the golf course across from our hotel. I immediately recognized Barry, but of course I couldn't let me friends see that I knew who the singer was. I stood on my balcony as the concert finished, pretending to take in the view. I have to say, he puts on a great show - if you like that kind of music, of course.

I would proudly list my entire collection, except that a determined reader would die of starvation before getting through it.

Well, the songs of Brigadoon might be iffy, but I never listen to them.
