You're right, Tennis Channel isn't very well known, and I pay extra for it. ESPN covers it sometimes, and USA and VS covered them briefly during the summer.
The good thing is that NBC picked up the last weekend of the US Open, and USA hadn't been involved last year that I know of, so coverage is becoming more widespread.
Do you see it when the Toronto and Montreal tournaments come around?

Yes, the Toronto & Montreal events get TV time here. I've caught some memorable matches (especially Monica Seles's comeback in the latter 90's).
Is coverage really getting more widespread? I see that this year's US Open set an all-time attendance record, but I have the impression that pro tennis's glory days of media/public visibility were in the Seventies.
On the other hand, back then there weren't premium sports channels providing more dedicated coverage, so maybe that evens out the equation.
