That's ok, KAY, Elena's needed. Otherwise, it would be a book of brilliant, powerful characters who did everything right, and there wouldn't have been a need for TPTP.

Well said---And to the Linden haters; there woulnd't be a third Chrons if it weren't for her.

(Although maybe it was her whinning that made Cov kill himsleft in the first place)

dang! Linden has become my favourite charcter in the whole series since RotE! I love this woman! She has developed so much! I was indifferent in the 2nd Chrons, but since book 7, I have gained a new respect for her character.

Don't get me wrong she has grown on me a LOT in the 3rd Chrons but I will reserve judgement until I read the next book.

she's still a whiner.

Linden to me is like Mary on the Mary Tyler Moore show.
Mary was the focus or the star but by herself boring as hell.
It's what happens around Mary and the responses to her interactions with those characters that are interesting (or in this case funny).

Nothing Linden does or says by herself interests me.
It's who we encounter through her (or in spite of her) that keeps me reading.
TC of the otherhand was interesting by himself.
Rather than just being a vehicle like Linden he ADDED to the story.

Would I want SRD to change her?
No, I see her as a nessesary evil.
:-x

 necessary evil... interesting. I hadn't realized that people would react to her that way, and to call her a whiner... :!: :?:
Anyway, I loved TC the first time I read the series. But in recent years I have found him less than appealing. I find him kinda whiny and so mopy; sometimes I just want to reach in to the pages and yell, SNAP OUT OF IT YOU DOPE! so, in that regard, I guess I now view TC as a "necessary evil" ....

HLT, you definitely asked for it:

Who can turn the world off with her whine?
Who can join a epic quest, and suddenly make us wish she was left behind?
Well it's you girl, and you sure do it.
With each groan and every little complaint you do it.

The Worm is all around, no need to wake it!
You can have the ring, why don't you take it!
You are the sun-sage after all!
You are the sun-sage after all!

Findail says to heal Law on your own.
Covenant's gone awefully bad, girl this time you're all alone.
But it's time you stopped your whining.
It's time you just possessed that guy whose shining.

The Worm is all around, no need to wake it!
You can have the ring, why don't you take it!
You are the sun-sage after all!
You are the sun-sage after all!

Well said. You've pretty much hit on my feelings about Linden there. I'm a Linden-hater and proud of it!

By contrast, I quite like Elena.

anyway...
Usivius writes,

and to call her a whiner... :!: :?:

okay...i didn't qualify, did i. apologies. maybe melodramatic is a better word. the naked light bulb sears her soul. i think she reacts weirdly to her parents. don't get me wrong...i LIKE Donaldson, but i think his drawing of her character is oversimplified a bit, making her seem like a melodramatic whiner to me. but having said that, i don't possess the "off button" that both Covenant and Avery seem to have and i don't understand people that do so...although i seem to be able to forgive it in Covenant, i am unable to allow it in Linden maybe.

been too long since i read the first six but i wasn't all that excited about seeing her again in ROTE.
i am with HLT on this character. he said it much more eloquently than i could have so i'll refer back to his post.

You know you want to own all the previous Covenant books... why do you resist? Resistance is useless... feel the pull of the Land...

LOL I also only owned Runes recently as well as the Mordants Need books but have just purchased all 6 previous Chronicles books again!

yes I want to own them but the bookshelves in my tiny little studio have no space for six new volumes!!!

i saw a trade pprbk of ROTE last evening at the bookstore when i picked up my pocketbook copy of The Real Story but i have never seen trade pprbks of the first six. i have hardback of ROTE but if the whole series was out in trade pprbk i WOULD buy them all again. all i've seen is the new editions of the pocketbooks (new covers) and i like the old covers better. the last time i read them, just after buying and reading ROTE for the first time, i just bought used pocketbooks and then traded them when i was finished. that was before i came HERE! who knew i'd need and encyclopedic memory to engage in conversations about them???!!!

besides...i'm collecting all the Erikson books just now. heh. :)

The ones I bought were in 2 volumes. The first Chronicles are in one big fat book as are the 2nd Chrons and they feature the in between covers - where LFB has the pic of Kevins Watc hwith the Landscape behind, TIW is the Forestal and TPTP is the picture of Foul's Creche. Saves a lot of thickness but i think the books are a little larger in height.

As a matter of curiosity, what do you mean by an "off button"?

I'm planning to start Gap book 2 tonight. I've been told it improves vastly after book 1 - which bodes well, since I enjoyed book 1.
