Hmmph! I bring my laptop to the land all the time. Caeric (haruchai/merwive, one of Cail's kids) seems to like playing Doom2.

No paper books = no bookshops = no second hand bookshops I cannot imagine a world without second hand bookshops. The smell of old books is incredible, that dusty warm odour sweet and strong, and when you open a book you can almost feel you are joined by those who have read it before.

But the best thing about second bookshops is they are always bigger on the inside than the outside. I always feel that I am inside one of those Escher pictures where you are not sure which way is up. By the way these Idea's are not my own they come from Terry Pratchett's concept of L-Space, but when I read it, then it was a moment of true recognition. Of course I am a member of second hand bookshops anonymous, and I try not to go into one today; my bank account can't take any more. E literature is fine, but it is not enough.

I agree !! Nothing can compare to the look,feel, and odour of a second hand book shop.. They're like orderly chaos and I still buy most of my books from them.....I could spend hours in them

I buy all my Thomas Covenant books from used book stores - losses, thievings, and movings have forced me to buy about 3-4 versions of each book. SRD is great but I don't need to pay him--and his publisher--every single time I lose a book!

My guess is that once SRD actually gets a contract for the Last Chronicles, the first volume will appear about 12-18 months later. The average unsung writer gink, myself for example, has to have a finished manuscript before he can even go asking editors politely for permission to submit -- something that was not the case when SRD was starting out -- followed by a year's wait for the editor to get round to reading the book and accept it. Only after that will the book be scheduled for publication, usually 12-18 months down the line.

SRD is not unsung nor particularly a gink, so he won't have any trouble getting an editor's attention, and won't have to wait a year for a response; and he can probably sell the manuscript based on a brief proposal. Publishers know he can deliver the goods. So the book can be scheduled for publication long before it's finished . . . but that doesn't mean it will be scheduled any earlier than Unsung W. Gink's book, purchased at the same time. Publishers just plan their releases that far in advance, that's all. From contract to bookshop is at least a year, unless you are Robert Jordan or J.K. Rowling, in which case EVERYBODY drops EVERYTHING they are doing to get that goldmine into production as fast as physically possible.

Okay, I'm pretty sure this is most likey just an error/rumor, but SFbookcase.com has the first title in the Covenant series listed as The Broken Sky and not The Runes of the earth. Publication date is listed as 2004.

Concerning the previous timeline discussion, I'm hoping Donaldson is done revising (at least the second draft) and is actively publisher hunting. With any luck we may hear something definite by late November.

Personally, I've seen enough of a broken Land, so I'm hoping that's not right either, or at least not the image it brings to mind.

Do we know who made the entry on that site? I heard it called "Runes" for the first time over a year ago. And the last we've heard right from SRD's mouth - last month? two months ago? - it was still Runes. I wonder if The Broken Sky was an initial title, and it was changed later. But the date on that listing is September 10th of this year - I wonder who entered it.

Lord Luof!! Where HAVE you been??? SRD is most definitely writing "The Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant". Check out the thread in this forum "News that sets SRD Fandom on fire." It has all the info!! There will be four books this time. The first one, "The Runes of the Earth" will be out sometime late 2004 or early 2005.
