When I have kids, I am going to read them the collected works of William Gaddis while playing Pierrot lunaire in the background. And yes, they will grow up insane.

Currently I'm reading a Horse and His Boy from the Narnia Chronicles.
Adam wanted to start him on the Lion and the Witch, but he's still a little too young for novel reading. So we're working our way through all the Disney-Blockbuster books; Little mermaid, Lion king, Pinnochio; stuff like that.
I think Isaac wants to hear more about Charlie, so I might pick up The GReat Glass Elvevator next.
We've already started some baby books with Owen.

Well; since no one else is interested in adding to this one...I'll keep it up! :D

Right now I'm Reading Adam the Hobbit...I didn't think he'd like it, and it never looks like he's paying attention, but he remembers everythings that's ahppened so afr, and gets quite upset when we miss a night.
-The cutest thing yet, was when he figured that Beorn had a tap hooked up the the beehives to get the honey out.

I'm reading Isaac this series called the Keys to The Kingdom byu an author named Garth Nix....there sems to be a book for each day of the week (currently we are reading Grim Tuesday)
I really don't like his writting, or the story line...but Isaac is loving it...and that's the important thing.

Oh my... let's see...

I've been reading to the kids since Alex was born... before that I taught daycare and read all the time.

I got Alex board books, most of which she has kept because they are special. We got more board books over time when they were little. Alex used to chew on them. I would ask her if she ate a good book lately. (I did the with all 3 of them and Alex still found it amusing.) Then I would recite:

"A goat on a stroll by a brook
Found and old movie film and partook.
'Was it good,' asked his mate.
Said the goat, 'Second rate.
Not nearly as good as the book.'"

Our favorites are...

Shel Silverstien's poems (I have "Ickle Me, Pickle Me Tickle Me Too" and "The Loser" memorized)
All the Curious George books
All of Dr. Suess
Calli loves every dinosaur book on the face of the planet.
"Click, Clack, Moo"
"Chicka, Chicka Boom Boom" and "Chick, Chicka 123"

Oh good grief... our library of books is so massive that I can't name them all. Oh! I love the monkey books... "Five Little Monkey's..." we have jumping on the bed and swinging in the tree. I so love Scholastic.

Alex has most of the Spiderwicks and has read all of the Series of Unfortunate Events.

Now Alex reads chapter books to her sister, brother and Nathan. We are going to get the kids to where they each read something to all the others every day (Nick will have something very simple, but he is beginning to read quite well). I just bought the whole series of young Jack Sparrow and we are planning to get the kids doing this with these books. They are simple chapter books... Alex said she would help Nick. I just love to see the kids learning to love reading.

Is he even available in the USA?

Some of our board book, by kid number three are ripped too far gone.

Good one's too.

Goodnight Moon is now in three peices, and I just found out our copy of the Very Hungry Catterpiller is now in took parts.

I don't have kids yet, but I do at least have memories of being read to.
drew wrote:Menolly--That is a great story--I'm impressed that Isaac can read Fox in Socks!!

Condition or not, If you weren't reading to him in the first place, he wouldn't have been able to read it.
I LOVE FOX IN SOCKS!

Well, it wasn't around when I was a kid (or I never read it if it was) but I've read it to some tots over the years.

I think Redwall was my first chapter book. A babysitter read me the first few chapters, but then she had to leave...and I of course wanted to read the ending! So I started on it. I had had some higher level stuff read to me by then (iliad, I think) but this was the first time I took initiative.

While that sounds sorta random, and owes more to the babysitter than to anyone else...my parents read a lot to me in general, and I'm sure that they played a more important part in me taking my own step than anyone else.

I figure that the most important thing about reading to your kid is to give them a love of reading for later, and to make sure they in turn read to their own kids (I'm planning my syllabus, discussion questions, and guest speakers for bedtime already).

What does he write? If he is available we probably have some of his work.

As for our board books... Drummer Hoff (Alex's favorite because I always let her say "Fired it off"), Goodnight Moon, the Curious Georges are all in tact. We did go through 2 Goodnight Moons though... it was the paperback that bought it. We went through 4 copies of Very Hungry Caterpillar... 2 paperbacks bought it, but the hardback and boardbook are still in tact.

I also recently raided thrift stores for BFG, James and the Giant Peach, etc.

Last night Alex read to the younger kids from the new Jack Sparrow book, "The Coming Storm" I beleive it is called. The kids loved it. I just love it now that Alex is taking over some of the aloud reading. I just wish Calli was not so lazy. She tries to find every way possible to get others to read to her. I am hoping to change her mind by giving her "The Crocodial Hunter" and another dino fact book that is not babyish. About the only books she is willing to read are "Danny the Dinosaur", all of the "How Do Dinosaurs..." books, and a few others that are simple picture books and she is turning 9!!! Although we know she CAN read because when she wants something she finds it out real quick. She acts like was and is and simple words like that are just impossible but she can read reticulating python no problem.

Dahl is great!! BFG is one of Isaac's fave's..as is Charlie and the Choclait factory...I'm planning on reading Charlie next to Adam.

Here is a link to Robert Munsch...a fave (For Canadian Kids anyways) For ages four to about eight or nine.

Most of his book are funny as hell...but "Love you Forever" can bring anyone (even a scruffy truckdriver) to tears..just thinking about it.

I just looked at the link and we have "Andrew's Loose Tooth." I bet Calli would love "Alligator Baby." I am going to have to see about getting more of these.

I'm a bad girl when it comes to books. I can't seem to stop buying them. Of course I only had 5 books growing up and they belonged to my eldest brother who is 7 years older than me. Now I buy more books that is good for me. ;)

My son and daughter just watched a video called "Rainbow Fish. Everyone is special."
Rainbow Fish is a popular Socialist propaganda book series as well, that teaches kids to give up their individuality for the group.

At the end of it I took 5 minutes to explain to them both that the video was wrong and in fact evil.
That if *everyone* was special then everyone is *normal*.
That the need to excel and take pride and celebrate your achievements is a GOOD thing.
Just don't be a dick about it. (I phrased it better for my kids ;) )
And yes I did get my inspiration for this straight from the movie The Incredibles.

Rainbow Fish sucks.
