I'm more than happy to check in at the HOTEL
Those two ladies are far from perfect but I love 'em and I can't even begin to imagine the Chronicles without 'em!

Elena! Elena! Elena! I think Elena is a great character. A little crazy, but so what. I enjoyed reading about her.
On the matter of Linden, I suggest people to imagine if after surviving the Second Chronicles and beating the Sunbane our heroic Linden is suddenly joined by this new character, a whiny leper who doesn't believe the Land is real and refuses to do anything to help it. Covenant had had a trilogy worth of character growth and change before Linden appeared, and then Covenant stayed around in the limelight giving Linden in the Second Chronicles less screentime than he had had in the First. Now in the Runes Linden is finally getting about where Covenant was by the end of The Power that Preserves.
It was totally awesome in The Runes of the Earth, when Linden... But well, that belongs to the spoiler forum.

Erm...this is just a shameless posting to put this thread back at the top of the pile. Sorry, but it had to be done.

LOL! Thanks, ur-monkey.
And nice post, Nerdanel. Yes, in terms of character development, I think most would agree that Linden was the main "star" of the Second Chronicles. Covenant had already gone through a huge character arc in the First Chrons, so by the time of the Second, he is a relatively static figure compared to Linden.
For an ostensibly dead guy, it will be interesting to see what kind of character development Covenant will have in the Last Chrons.

No way. Admittedly, it's hard to become enlightened when your entranced by Elohim. But Covenant's internal struggles are nonetheless large and critical. He has to learn to share responsibility for rescuing the Land; learn to love; learn to relinquish his innermost identity; learn to accept limitations (ironically); and ultimately learn how to leave his life. If anything, you might say that his struggles are no longer of an 'everyday joe' variety, as they were in the first Chronicles, and as such, they may be so elevated that we cannot perceive the changes so obviously. Further bumping of the accursed Linden Lovers topic will be punishable by DEATH!

Top point. TC and Linden were hardly on the same playing field at the start of the 2nd Chrons. TC had already won the Kick-The-Ass-Of-The Baddest-Ass-In The Universe World Cup when poor Linden was probably still at college, learning how to play pool. Give the lass a break, THOOLAH! (If I'd had her upbringing, then been told I had a moral and spiritual obligation to save the cosmos, I'd wanna be cut some slack for treating myself to the odd moan...)

What's wrong with shooting pool?

It's a great game!
My feelings toward Linden change every time I read the
Chronicles. But I've never hated her. As a matter of fact, I have grown more attached to her with every read. As ur-monkey pointed out, she had a
lot of personal history to fight through in order to even
survive in the Land, let alone save it.
For me, my initial problem with Linden was that I felt she was an intruder. Just like I felt Hile Troy was an intruder. The Land was
Covenant's to save or damn. Nobody else's. So when Hile Troy showed up, a character from Covenant's world, I felt betrayed. NO!!!! Only Covenant is allowed to come from the "real" world and visit the Land! AARRGGHH!!!
I felt the same way about lInden at first. Even more so, maybe, because I felt that there may be a passing of the torch. In a sense there was.
But as we all know, the
Chronicles would not be the same without Linden. As annoying as some of you find her, she is an integral and necessary character. And quite frankly, I wouldn't have it any other way.
(Notice how Linden's introduction shifted the reader's focus from Covenant's shortcomings to Linden's persona? Just by introducing Linden, SRD added new support for Covenant in the
Second Chronicles, due simply to character comparison/contrast)

I too am appalled to see how quickly this community of thinking, generally farsighted folk have descended into acrimony. Could the despiser be at work among us? Is not each character crucial to the final outcome of the chronicles? We each have favorites and sOme identify with one or another character on a personal level.
I am an admirer of lena, and elena, atarian, The First, of course Linden - each flawed yet each following their own truth. Struggling with it but trying to be true. Just as Thomas Covenant and the Great Lords strugggled and sometimes even appeared to fail. Let's try to remember the big picture.
Personally I appreciate SRD including diverse women who tho' flawed like TC contribute to the history of the land and to the outcome of The Chronicles.

Oh, I fully agree.
100%
You're absolutely correct.
That's exactly right.
Completely agree.
Every character created by SRD has their merits, and they are all interesting people who all contribute to the series as a whole.
...
.......
...............
Except Linden. She's simply the Anti-Christ.
Hail THOOLAH!

Welcome to the House of Linden, covenantparadox.
And I've decided that you, my High-phenated Lord Jay, are also welcome in our humble place of peace and love, despite your unreasoning scorn. Linden is a forgiving soul, so I must try to emulate her example. (Well, okay, she doesn't forgive evil bastards who steal her son, but otherwise...)
FEEL LINDEN'S LOVE

J-O-K-E?
What is this strange concept? Is it an attempt to lighten the brevity of our serious discourse on how great Linden and Elena are?
If so, it will not work, I tell you!

It is always so with evil... it only perverts, it never creates. *shakes head* it is indeed a sad day when a misguided soul revels in Despite... but fear not, brother Sunbaneglasses, for Linden will surely forgive you, despite your (many) flaws and your near-blasphemy. Come, come to us... we will care for you... come...
