Freaking Bump! How the heck can a former human destroy the staff of and take down, a Maiar for creek's sake!!!
Yes, that scene also left me...disquieted is the best word. Not being a Tolkien scholar, I couldn't pin down why exactly it bothered me that the Witch King could break Gandalf's staff like that. But yeah, you nailed it.

Also, I checked the Tolkien forum and found this thread where burgs posted his review of the film: The Return of the King Extended Version ***Spoilers***

You should check it out, burgs really channels his disgust for that scene in that review. ;)

Don't get me wrong, I totally get what Jackson was getting at for the non purists/readership - the Witch-King represents Sauron...so he should be uber powerful in the eyes of the audience, but as someone who is a book fan and understands some of the true background of Middle-earth, it's just freaking ridiculous, even Sauron is just a Maiar like Gandalf, so he probably couldn't even do that, well maybe, but not so easily...well, no, he couldn't, Gandalf has one of the three Rings, too...

I also read somewhere that Jackson hated the Dues Ex of the Dead, but kept them in and used them the way he did for the fans of the book...interesting development, considering it was the one thing that really really eurked me about RotK...

burgs really layes it down there in that thread. Nice.
