I missed quite a few...

Stevie Nicks
Tracy Chapman
Bonnie Rait
Joan Osbourne
Enya

Tarja Turunen of Nightwish
Cristina Scabbia of Lacuna Coil

I don't think my next choice necessarily had great voices in themselves, but they used them well - The Bangles :)

I am afraid there will be some iterations of names mentioned above, but here is my list of female vocalist I can listen to only because of their voices:

Enya
Kirsty MacColl
Loreena McKennit
and amazingly at some times PJ Harvey

Other vocalists I really like are Suzanne Vega, the vocalists in Adiemus, and the female lead in Capercaillie.

Rivenrock, you beat me to Claire Torry... well, she did amazing on DSOTM; but if you saw the P.U.L.S.E video, the three vocalists performing The Great Gig are also awesome (one of them is Sam Brown of Stop! fame).

Anyway, my favourites:

Loreena McKennitt
Tina Turner
Sade
Rickie Lee Jones

Whoa...another soul who knows Kirsty MacColl's voice! Fantabulous! McKennitt and Enya are great, too, of course.

Dido caught my attention with White Flag, but so far I haven't seen anything else she has done in that league.

Well, yes... DSOTM was the album that truly introduced me into stereo world and Floyd... never stopped since then loving them.
Yes, there are three vocalsit girls doin tGGitS on PULSE. Great version also.

Amazingly, Gilmour and Waters seem to compete with each other, wich one of them can bring better vocalists into their shows... Waters also had great voices iwth him on his tour last year. Worth listening to.

Lead singer from Kosheen (can't remember her name)
Sian Evans.

I'm gonna revise my own list, as it's been nearly 9 months and all.

I'l keep Beth Orton, Sarah Cracknell and Roisin Murphy, but I'll add the following:

Alison Goldfrapp: can sound like anyone from Shirley Bassey to Shirley Manson, and very sexy too.

P J Harvey: more for being such a creative musician than a vocalist, but still very cool.

An Pierle: Gorgeous sounding Belgian chanteuse (what does that mean? 1000 WGDs to the first person who can tell me).

Beth Gibbons: Former Portishead vocalist, so should be self-explanatory. Excellent solo album last year.

pre-2000 Sophie Ellis-Bextor: Probably not going to be a popular choice, but her earlier work with theaudience and Manic Street Preachers sees her singing in a softer and more appealing voice than her solo stuff. Shame that she might just be the worst songwriter in the world.

There's been a discussion on Tori Amos??? 8O

Tori Amos
Shirley Manson (Garbage)
Goldfrapp
Beth Gibbons (Portishead)
Björk (not always though)

What's the name of the "Cardigans" singer? She can sound really creepy.

Sadly, we have neglected Happy Rhodes, the New Yorker with the divine larynx. Hard to find her stuff, but it is wondrous. Truly.

Great Gig in the Sky from Dark Side of the Moon?
Holy crap, you got it! 100,000 WGD coming your way.
