as Cail already said, Zappa ... anyone who has three (4?) albums entitled "Shut Up And Play Your Guitar' having basically only guitar solos on them, has to be special ... as Cail mentioned, he did stuff people still shake their heads over. He wasn't particularly speedy as an Ingwe Maustein (SP) but he had some creative chops.

Another on my list og 'guitar god' is Robert Fripp. Totally original sound in the 'rock' field. No one plays like him.

John McLaughlin perhaps goes on that list (jazz fusion like Matheny)

Fred Frith is also very, very amazing! Got to see him live once... probably the most creative guitar player I have ever seen and heard. Ever.

"The League of Crafty Guitarists"

Oh, there are so many...

- Brian May. He's so inventive, plays so many styles and has such a gorgeous sound that you just can't help being impressed. This is the man who made me want to play the guitar.

- Ritchie Blackmore. Emotion, baby. When he's angry or upset he tortures his strings, breaks guitars and television cameras that get in front of him. When he's inspired, he just stands there with his eyes closed and plays those soft notes on the strat. Incredible licks, classic songwriting.

- Steve Vai. Alien.

- I'm not even going to mention Joe Satriani, he's a given. Oh wait now I mentioned him.

- John Petrucci. A relative newbie in the field, but has definitely made his mark. Technical virtuoso and not afraid to play long, slow beautiful parts as well. Scenes From A Memory is my favourite cd ever.

- Django Reinhardt. Two fingers, baby. Need I say more?

- Paco de Lucia. Right now I'm listening to an anthology of his work and it is simply jaw-dropping. Listen to him play with McLaughlin and Di Meola in The Guitar Trio and realize no mortal (let alone some upstart rock guitarist) can match this.

Crap, I forgot Blackmore. That man knows more about tone than anyone else in the world. That smoky, overcooked sound he gets on the StoneCold outro solo is just ungodly. I discovered Ritchie right after I discovered Jimmy Page, and it was a tossup as to who I liked better for a long time.

Rainbow will go down in history as the most underrated band (at least in the US) in history, right ahead of Triumph, which brings us to....

Arguably the best thing to ever come out of Canada.

Robert Fripp for me, with David Gilmour second.

I'm not saying he's a god (I'm not saying he's not, either), but he is definately iconic and created some fine riffs, one of them voted best riff of all time. Slash.

Iconic, sure (even though he's borrowed his look from Joe Perry from the early 80s), but definately not a god.

Gotta go with Stanley Jordan on guitar.

Why?

His technique and style, at least when I first saw him back in 1987, was unbelievable. I didn't pick up my guitar for at least a week after seeing him live, I felt like what wwas the point. Other guitarists and bassists have since copied his technique, but there is none like the original.

On bass, all time favorite is Steve Harris from Iron Maiden. He is the sole reason that I went out and bought my first bass.

As for my favorite trio...Dave Murray, Adrian Smith and the afore mentioned Steve Harris of Iron Maiden. The harmonies and melodies that they put out are still to this day (in my opinion) classics.

I didn't even think about bassists....

Steve Harris, Tony Levin, Muzz Skillings, and much as I hate to say it, Flea.

Honorable mentions to John Paul Jones and Geezer Butler.

I have seen Bob Mould twice, once with Sugar (electric) and once acoustic. with Husker Du and his flying vee he could sound like an army of guitarists. acoustic, he plays with passion/emotion. he has graduated to embrace electronica as well. but for guitar greatness, check out the ending of Celebrated Summer where he sounds like the end of the world.

Andy Latimer-This guy taught David Gilmore and Steve Howe how to play, and Camel's music (one song in particular that sounds almost exactly like Zappa) definately inspired original Genesis. 8)

Absolutely. Dave and Adrian taught me twin solos. Also, I'm in an Iron Maiden tribute band

No question about it. Slash's stuff, while energetic, is a sloppy, fumble-fingered mess that anyone can figure out in a couple of minutes. Contrast that with the energetic, complex stuff from Emmett and there's no comparison. Emmett was (and remains) a tremendous player.

Listen to Midsummer's Daydream, and see if you don't agree.
