I'd just as soon keep the f word censored, but I've noticed that it also blocks out links wherein the f-word is part of the URL, even if the picture is not offensive. My compromise here, I think, would be to not censor anything but make it strongly clear that gratuitous use of that word (or any extremely offensive word) is highly frowned upon, and mods reserve the right to censor if they feel that the privilege of self-expression is being abused. (Yes, I feel it's a privilege here, not a right. If you want to know why, ask me in the Tank. 8) )

Same thoughts from me.

Also agree with Alynna. If the censor is removed, I side with her position.

I think Kevin's Watch is pretty much safe from degrading into an insult-fest. Turkish hackers excepted, people who hang out here are self-selected to be a group that is capable of reading demanding, philosophical prose. I do not think we have too many typical thirteen-year-old boys here.

I think it's not the words, it's the intent. A reasonably imaginative person has no trouble being mean regardless of any filters. (I think I shouldn't demonstrate. You have your own imagination.) Moderators are the only good defense against that.

Kevin's Watch, to me, is an oasis of civility in an otherwise endless cesspool which is the Web.

If you can't communicate or express yourself without resorting to swearing or bother to take the time to replace a "u" with "*" then you need to take a good look at yourself.

This isn't a question asking about censorship.
It asking if we would mind lowering our standards!!!

The introduction of swears in Runes was greeted here with a mix of reactions.
Some good, some bad.
The use of those words, like the rape of Lena has made it a book I wouldn't recommend to young readers.

I look at this way, if you can't respect me enough to refrain from swearing in a post then I won't bother responding.
Isn't the whole purpose of the Watch to respond and discuss?

I think my past posting history here makes it clear that I like to mix it up in all areas with humor and sometimes anger but if I had to vote for one that would become Law I vote for censorship with additional words added.

Currently I like what we have now: an ideal system of keeping the swearing to an occasional mistake with a followup apology.

Here's a good slippery slope example:
What's next?
Images?
There was a post made showing a man and a woman having sex in a car.
There was no nudity shown but the pic was changed into a text link rather than an image. I'm not saying that that was "censorship" (since I think it was one after someone's request) but the idea was the same.
I wonder if anyone would have bothered to make the request if it had been followed by 5 posts containing swears and like minded images.
Don't get me wrong, I thought that particular post was funny and because there was no nudity I had no problem with it but I could also understand where someone else might have.

Also I can't see the Members here becoming a frat house overnight either but there are new members joining all the time.

Because the tone of the watch is clean civil and friendly I would hate to see it marred by an occasional Raver.
The people of the Land didn't swear, why should we?

Various groups of people have their own ways of swearing. The Giants liked "stone and sea". Covenant used "hellfire and bloody damnation" and Linden took Lord's name in vain. The Illearth-corrupted once-humans from The Illearth War invoked Lord Foul: "Slayer take him". Lytton used the f-word.

One of those is a widely considered to be much worse than the others, but if you consider it dispassionately, wishing damnation (or Lord Foul) upon someone is really much worse than any sort of sexual congress.

And by the way, I'm on another board with no word filter whatsoever AND guest posting allowed, and I find the place very nice. The only trouble is that the board is so popular that keeping up with it is impossible.

shitfire and save matches is the one i use mostly. but after voting you have all made me changed my mind. the mods can edit anything that is too far out of bounds, right? that is if the party refuses to change it. and as the Zamfir follies show, banning is an option for anyone who continues to cross the line.

Well, the good news, is that I've played with the censor controls and I don't think this is a problem anymore. I changed it so it no longer bans larger words (or URLs) that contain the f-word. It should just ban the word in question itself now. Along with the grammatical variations of the word. So that shouldn't be a problem anymore. This should also solve the problem of ******* being changed to ****.

I just wanted to point that out, but I'll let people discuss this some more before we decide on anything.-jay
