I agree, it was a disturbing scene. It bothered me; I couldn't get it out of my head for a long time. Just one of those things.

True Q -- young intern Amanda suddenly saves the Enterprise from imminent disaster, thus revealing that she actually has Q powers! It's pretty cool to see a female Q.

Maryam D'Abo was also the Bond girl in "The Living Daylights."

what's the Q episode where Picard and Q have the Hamlet dialogue. i loved that!!!

Whoa, I can remember the titles of exactly two episodes of the top of my head, (well, technically they're two episodes). Encounter at FarPoint and the DS9 3-part Homecoming, about the rescue of Bajoran freedomfighters from a Cardassian prison planet. (That is my favourite DS9 though...it's the one that got me into the whole series.)

I never really liked Q, I must admit. And Cail? You think the TNG acting was more wooden than TOS? I mean, OK, it was wooden...but not more.

Q was one of the best things about TNG, imo. I shake my head when I realize that he wasn't featured at all in any of the Next Generation movies. Not even a casual cameo. Unbelievable. Meanwhile, the Borg got to strut their lame butts on the big screen. Hmph.

Bah, Q was overdone. He was like comic relief for when Data got boring...

Though I enjoyed the Q character I never bought into his behavior. I've mentioned this before. Q reminds me of Loki. A god in his own right but out for mischief, though in Qs case we are to believe that his ploys and antics are for some greater, unfathomable to humans, purpose. Perhaps it was the fact that Q's actions and words came from all too human writers. Or perhaps a more genuine approach to an all-knowing omnipotent creature would be stuffy and boring to a television audience. I can't say for sure but Q never rang quite true to me. I'm sure I'm over thinking the whole thing but that was my impression. But in then end I enjoyed the Q based stories whenever they popped up.

Agreed, the only thing worse than a TNG Q episode is a DS9 Ferengi episode.

Q doesn't fall under the category of unpopular so much as perhaps mis understood. (The only aspect of Q that I genuinely disliked was Corbin Bernsen. That was just rediculous.) Maybe it was understanding just what the deal with the Q really was. Whatever their Wurd or word or whud or weird or whatever is supposed to be. (Notice the SRD reference) The Q conflict as depicted on Voyager seemed interesting but in my opinion only confused the issue.
I suppose it comes down to this. Either you love Q or you hate him. You think his character is cool or just downright idiotic. Fans of STNG can find polarizing characters everywhere. "Oh God! Its another episode featuring Deana's Mother." "When will they kill Wesley Crusher!" "How can Riker possibly stay with Picard and pass up another chance to command his own ship?"

I think Tom put his finger on it when he said that Q just didn't ring true. That's exactly what the problem was. He was both too much, ridiculously human, and too little, ridiculously human. *shrug*

The only one I even vaguely enjoyed was when he has his powers stripped from him.

And although I've never really thought about it, Dlb is right...DS9 way overdid the Ferengi. They were...annoying...just like Q.

So, is it the general view here that Trek writers don't handle omnipotent cosmic beings very well? I had no trouble accepting Q, but people here obviously aren't too impressed with his character.

What about Trelayne, the Liberace-wannabe from the original series? The rest of you can have that particularly annoying cosmic being as a pal. Me and Lucimay will go play with Q, thanks.

Maybe it's just that I couldn't imagine an omnipotent cosmic being acting like that. In fact, he acted pretty much like a human would act given limitless cosmic power.

I suppose he wasn't omniscient though, so that might account for it...
