We could have the whole forum based on Jay's antics.

Indeed, I agree with most of what's been said in favour of the idea.
Truth, I just felt someone should make the argument for the strong negative view, get opinions flowing, heh.
The only thing I have against a humour forum is I don't see it as something we need, but I can accept that if it existed we'd make good use of it.

Yeah, I often do that in the Close, take an argument and argue for it despite I might agree with it, in part to create a decent debate; and also give an objective opinion - it helps I think.

Glad you can see some good in it - I think it would help empty the general discussion a bit as well. And God knows that's too full.

And so, as time goes on, we strip religion, politics, TV, film, music, literature, news, and humour from GD - and what is left? What, when all has been segregated, remains for that nebulous realm of "General"? I'll tell you:
The Good Morning Thread
The Good Night Thread
The Apology Thread
How Are You Feeling Today?
...Until the day we decide to open the daily life forum.

Oh I've wanted a comic book forum too! Great idea.
I think a humor forum would be good too - granted we can still post randomness in Gen Disc.
Also, the current affairs sounds alright - since so many people steer clear of the Think-Tank.

I'm against the current affairs forum because isn't that what the Think Tank is for? What's next, an American politics forum because someone complained about too many american threads? Don't we have a general forum for general stuff including humour? Otherwise, what's a gen disc forum for? All this specifying is way too much.

I have to agree with Lore there - I can see maybe having a comic forum, but surely General discussion covers Humour and the Think Tank covers current affairs. At least, they do at the moment, with no apparent problems or complaints.

Well it does seem more people are for it than against... maybe there can be a think tank, and once you click into it, you can have a the two seperate forums?

Way too much specifiying. It's not as if people cant find threads for the current affairs or the comic/joke threads. What's next, personal feeling threads for the 'how do you feel today', 'apology' and similar threads?
Not attacking you, friend, just stating my view.

heh, I know. It doesn't seem like it matter... people think it'll help. It has it's benefits, and it'll be good to have something fresh on the Watch.

What's the use of gen disc, then? Or the Think Tank? What is decided to be current affairs and what isn't? Is everthing that's current news no longer legit in the think tank?

I agree with LoreMaster about the current affairs forum. That is indeed what the 'Tank is about.
If people feel that the "News" threads are co-opting the news stories they'd like to think about, there's one easy solution.
Post it in a new topic.
I guarantee that you'll get responses. The point of those threads was so that we didn't have to get a new topic for every random news story.
Originally, every story that generated discussion was split out into it's own thread, as became appropriate. That's no longer possible due to the server error though. For now at least.
But any forum dedicated to current events is, as HLT said, going to become another 'Tank anyway.
It's not as though the people complaining about the 'Tank are trying it out by making topics that interest them to see what happens...
If it'll make you feel better, I can unsticky the news topics, but to try and split the 'Tank like that would be even less productive than the idea of splitting Mallorys.
The plague would only spread anyway.
Comic forum? Sure. Humour? Why not? (Although Gen Disc should cover it really.) Current affairs? We have the 'Tank. If we don't keep the politics isolated, (and anybody who thinks a new forum could be kept politics free is clearly insensitive to human nature), who knows what could happen?
And threads that became big/popular would move to the 'Tank anyway. Why not just
start them there?
So in short, (

), I'm against it.

Not really, would you really want people posting about small articles they saw the local newspaper about something that would seem small agaisnt the stuff you discuss in there? How long before the spirit of the Tank was weighed down by that stuff?

That's why the Tank has threads for posting that sort of thing. And anyway, wouldn't a current affairs thread be weighed downed by exactly that sort of thing?
Having a current affairs thread would pretty much invalidate the tank; 90% of the discussion is current affairs. Remove that and we pretty much will just have the legalise it thread and threads about democracy, PC, etc.
Finally, it would be a pain to jump between the two forums.

Exactly. And nothing stops people from posting anything they want. Plenty of existing topics started out of a news story, and plenty of active threads have current stories relevant to the topic posted in them.
I don't think redundancy is necessary here.

i am also against the new news thread. how will you decide when something should be in the tank and when it should be in the new news?

I am not really in favor of the proliferation of more forums, frankly. It gets to be too much when topics get so subdivided that you have to click on a dozen different forums to get to the correct designation for your topic.
I am more likely to see and participate in a discussion if it's in the more generalized forums. I don't have time to check every single subforum every time I come to the Watch.
It seems as though I'm in the minority in this viewpoint, but that's my two cents worth.

I'm with Lore, variol, Avatar, Null and MsMary.
Comics forum is fine; no more than that, though.
(I'm not going to switch again, this is the position I'm sticking with now)
