Personally, I see either 1 or 3 happening. I get the sense that if the Wii doesn't start reclaiming ground for Nintendo, it'll be the last straw. As you say, hopefully the growing success of the DS is a sign of good times to come.Lord Foul wrote:I picture the Wii doing one of three things: 1) gain commercial and critical ground, like the DS did, 2) maintain 3rd place, like the GameCube did, 3) go the way of the Dreamcast, putting Nintendo out of the console business.

There are some really ominous signs coming from Sony at the moment, this could be where Nintendo regain a lot of their market share. Also, daft as the name is, I can see it only being used in the Japanese market. All that 'we' symbolism isn't really going to wash with the Western markets.

Hey all, I don't usually visit this part of the forum as I'm not much of a gamer.
Actually, none of us are, but we are considering having FIL get Beorn a new console for Xmas. He has a Game Cube and Game Boy Advance, and a Dreamcast that he loves, although the game selection for that is limited.
We were thinking of going with the PS3, as Beorn has enjoyed the PS2 games his friends have as he's gotten older, but some other forums I've visited seem really excited about the Wii. And with his overall low muscle tone, I'm thinking the full body mode of playing may be beneficial for him.
Plus the rumor that supposedly it is going to sell for somewhat less than the PS3 is a consideration as well.
Any new input from y'all on it since May?

"Somewhat less" is putting it mildly, as the Wii won't be more than 250$, whereas the PS3 will come in two flavors: 20GB HDD for 499$ and 60GB HDD for 599$. Also: many people are buying HDTVs to get all they can out of the PS3, so you could be spending around 1200$ when all's said and done.Menolly wrote:Plus the rumor that supposedly it is going to sell for somewhat less than the PS3 is a consideration as well.
The Wii is also taking an innovation stance, which proved successful with the DS. They're dramatically changing the way we interact with our games, whereas Sony and Microsoft are upping the resolution and the pricetag on what's basically current-gen games.
I was planning on geting one, but im going to wait until i finish uni for the summer ( in about 6 months ), so i have time to play it. Might even be cheaper / available in black by then

That's got to be the contradiction of the year - a student with no time for playing games?Warmark wrote:I was planning on geting one, but im going to wait until i finish uni for the summer ( in about 6 months ), so i have time to play it. Might even be cheaper / available in black by then

I havene't, I don't make enough money to buy a new system right now withot sacrificing book buying power and the like.Menolly wrote:Has anyone gotten the Wii? I scored one yesterday by getting in line at Target at 4:30 am. But, it's not going to be opened and played with by Beorn until Chr-stmas, so I'm wondering how players are liking it?
But a few of my friends have. Only talked to one, he really likes Zelda and praises the gameplay quite highly as well as incorporation of the controller, but he tends to be pretty nintendo fanboyish and has loved all zelda games (personally I didn't like Windwaker).
Red steel is apparently ok, the football games are fun, and I ain't got any word on anything else. A lot of stronger titles are apparently coming out around Chr-stmastime, so at least he won't feel any sort of drag from a lack of titles (I did with the PS2, first truly good game was Timesplitters).

Gotta agree. Loved Wind Waker's graphics but just didn't feel it like I did with Ocarina. On the upside, Twilight Princess will probably end up being my favorite 3D Zelda, which is saying a lot.Holsety wrote:But a few of my friends have. I doubt it'll top Link to the Past. That's very subjective for me, though, as I played it at age seven and got such a feeling of awe. I never imagined a game was capable of such scope. I'll never forget just exploring--or when I found out there were eight more dungeons after the first three! Only Mario 64 wowed me as much, and that's because it was probably the first 3D game I ever witnessed. Not a bad intro to the third dimension, if I do say so myself.
Sadly, I'll probably remember stuff like that more than my trip to Britain! Ah geez. Guess I am a geek, heh.

Same with me as far as LttP. I think that all things considered I'd have to rate Ocarina above it, but I still like them about equally because LttP has so much more nostalgic value for me. I actually played it when I was 9, beat the original Zelda when I was 5 or 6, but it was one of the first SNES games I played and has some real staying power with me.Lord Foul wrote:Gotta agree. Won't know until the 31st at the earliest.Warmark wrote:Enjoying it?Menolly wrote:I picked up the DragonBall Z Budokai Tenkaichi 2 for the Wii yesterday. Hopefully Beorn will like it...
He'll open it tomorrow, when we 'do Chr-stmas' with FIL, who won't arrive here until around 2:00 pm today after working midnight to 8:00 am this morning. But since Paul is at home packing, and neither FIL, Beorn, or I will probably understnd the directions for setting up and using the Wii, this will be the one console we'll bring home and set up in the new place.
We're heading home Friday, but Beorn has a doctor's appointment as soon as we get home, and then he and I have a B'nai Mitzvah to attend on Saturday. So I foresee Sunday being the earliest we'll set it up, and I think Paul is planning on renting a u-haul again that day and will expect our help with moving.
It will be good practice in resisting instant gratification for Beorn...
