News Article

This looks really good. As a big fan of the original, and of Jim Henson in general, I think that Tartakovsky will do a bang up job with it. I've liked all the other stuff he's done.
"We can have a puppeteer in a blue suit holding the puppets and moving them around, and then we'll just take the puppeteer out," Tartakovsky said, going far beyond the days when Henson had four or five people squatting beneath each puppet. "Now we can put the puppet's feet on the puppeteer and connect their hands, and they can actually move them around."
That sounds like a really genius idea. It'll totaly dispense with all the clunky movements.

I just finished one of the special features on the Dark Crystal and it shows Jim Henson talking about how they had planned out the entire Dark Crystal world not just the places or scenes that the movie would include.

It'll be great groundwork for Tartakovsky to use. I'm SUPER excited for it, especially now that the tenative time is mid '08.
I finally took the time to read both articles. I'm excited, but curious. Why does neither article mention the lightsaber duel with Yoda? Surely that one scene was important to the development of the technology that will be used in this film...

One of my favourite films from my childhood.
Can't wait to see this!

I am also a fan of Samurai Jack and Clone Wars so that's good enough for me.

I have Brian Froud's book, "The World of the Dark Crystal".
Well worth checking out if you can find one.

I spent a day at Barnes and Nobles and read this. It was EXCELLENT. Great artwork.

I think I have that Dark Crystal book too, somewhere (Was sitting on the coffee table for the longest time). It's about the size of a paperback but horizontal, rather than vertical, right, graphic novel more or less?

MMm... I don't know if they printed it in paperback or not, but the one I read was a huge hardback.

The Jim Henson Company held a special Q&A session at the 2007 ComicCon International convention in San Diego. Brian Henson, Lisa Henson, John Chandler, Halle Stanford, Patrick Bristow and Julianne Buescher were on site to answer questions from the audience. Inevitably some questions about Power of the Dark Crystal came up; here is what Henson had to say:
"We’re working on 'Power of the Dark Crystal' and those are animatronics puppets but with a whole lot of cool compositing techniques and animation enhancement that will be animatronics better then you’ve ever seen them done."
- Brian Henson
"All of this is cloaked in secrecy...there is something great coming along... Fans of 'The Dark Crystal' did detect that we were moving a little slowly, and it’s kind of true, we had a little setback but are back on track. The movie will not be coming out until 2009 so we’re not going to be showing anything for a while."

Thanks not only for word of the sequel, but the name of the original. I've been recalling bits and pieces of the original for weeks now, was trying to figure out what it was called so I could find and watch it again.

No problem. I LOVE this movie because the nostalgia I remember is the same quality I get when I watch it now.

Bummer not coming out until 2009? I was hoping to see it in 2008, but, better to wait then to get an inferior product, and it sounds like they are intending to give us a superior one.

I agree, it's much better for them to take some time and make it right, than to pump out something inferior.

I watched the "Dark Crystal" this weekend. I was reminded at what a beautiful amazing world Jim Henson created with his art and imagination. He truly turned puppeteering into pure magic. :P What a brilliant, wonderful man he was.

Hey, all, I'm just wondering who your favorite character was in The Dark Crystal?

I'm most fond of Aughra, the feisty astrologer-oracle. I remember one of Henson's crew describing the character as "so ugly she's beautiful." I couldn't have put it better.

I'm assuming Aughra will be in the new movie, and I'm hoping they'll keep her rough-and-tumble quality. I don't want her "prettified."

MM, we agree wholeheartedly. Augra is my favorite, hands down. She RULES.

I really liked Chamberlain, the Skesis. His little whine was the ultimate shudder for me when I was a kid. Pure evil, that one.

Tough question. I like The Chamberlin, Aughra and also Jen and Kira, and still tear up when Jen's master dies.

Just thinking about it gives me the willies. I can't begin to count the number nightmares that guy gave me.

Balon...

The Dark Crystal was released before you were born, right? Have you ever seen it in a theatre?

Nope. Which is part of the reason I'm excited about the sequel. I really want to see it for free and on the big screen.

My heart just cried for you. The original was awesome on the big screen with proper sound.
