Thanks Menolly.
I've had a look and there are some really good things on that site. I'm on a bit of a vegan hiatus at the moment but some of those dishes look very tasty regardless.
But I'm never, ever on a pie hiatus!

i once made the mistake of stopping into a cafe for a cup of coffee in san francisco on the way to work without really knowing what it was all about. you see, all the food is vegan and raw meaning no heat, marinade, brewing, leavening, or any such manner to prepare food. my "coffee" was cold pressed and didn't taste like coffee. it tasted more like a roasted barley tea. the fellow behind the counter asked if i'd been there before, i said no. he explained that all costomers are to be asked a question. the question of the day was, "what thrills you?" i answerd him although i kinda wanted to pop him one for the terrible coffee that cost me close to $3.00. but you know what? they've got great "pie". 'corse it's not really pie. i had their "cheesecake" which didn't have cheese or cake in it but it was goood. the cheese part was avocados and the crust was ground nuts. so there is hope for you vegans out there when it comes wanting a good slice of pie. as for the coffee though you're on your own.

That must have been quite the experience.
Of course, not all vegans eat only raw foods...

I'm a little sorry I skipped going to breakfast. But danlo and Lady Tam took me to a place that had the
best huevos rancheros I
ever had before I headed to the airport on Monday. Between that and the chille rellenos in Jemez Springs at Los Ojos Sunday evening, I was one happy southwestern food camper...
Now, if only I had had a
real New Mexican margarita at some point. Although the two premixed ones I
did have served their purpose...

If your purpose was gettin' sloppy drunk and passing out on the host's couch, that is.
Fist, Christy and I went to a New Mexican restaurant called Cervantes on Sunday night, and I had stuffed sopapillas (sp?) that were really good.

My
purpose was to try and sleep past 5:00 am the next morning. Didn't work.
::but at least y'all now know I can not hold my liquor. and there had best not be any pictures of me on said couch as Creator claims to have deleted the one he took B"H:::
Was I a sloppy drunk? I don't recall that. Just an avid Gator fan one.

Did danlo and Tam suggest that place? I think that's where we went for the huevos on Monday and I seem to recall danlo saying something about Fist and Chr-sty eating there.
You weren't mentioned though...

The guy at the registration desk at Courtyard suggested it. It's really close to Danlo's house so it's probably the same one.

Most likely. The one we went to was really close as well. But I didn't get the name.
:snort:
You didn't answer my question about if I
really was a sloppy drink, Mr. Tactful...

Made my first blueberry/rasberry pie yesterday. I didn't realize it was so easy. I've always made custard, chocolate, torte, or squash pies wich are alot more work. Ate it with home made ice cream.

I'm gonna make a peach blueberry pie for the bbq next weekend!

Last pie I made was a few weeks ago. I made a black RASPERRY pie. I picked the raspberries from Mom's orchard, used instant tapioca as the thickener, threw in some sugar and lemon juice. It was freakin' awesome, and my guests said so too.
Right now I am craving peach pie. Or cobbler--I'm not picky!

So Wylde, tell me, why tapioca instead of flour? Jenn uses tapioca, too. Does the filling come out clearer than when using flour? More gel-like?

Yes, BGB, it is more clear and gel-like than flour. Also if you use the right amount, it completely dissolves giving the pick a dense texture and better "mouth-feel" than flour. Flour can clump unevenly even under the best circumstances. Also, when flour is used as the thickener, it has a tendency to "give up" juice, which then makes the pie watery and the crust gets soggy.
I use Kraft Minute Tapioca, and I believe that it has a recipe on the box for fruit pie. I think I used something like 1/4 cup of tapioca for my last pie.

I made peach blueberry pies for the barbecue. I sliced the peaches, tossed in some blueberries, soaked the fruit in a shot of triple sec, added two capfuls of vanilla, about 1/3 cup of sugar, a sprinkle of cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves, a pinch of salt and about 1/2 cup of tapioca. Baked in the oven at 375 for about 40 minutes. I actually accidentally let em go a little too long but they were still ok.

I want some of Jenn's pie. Or some peach cobbler. Say, Walmart super center is open 24 hours. . .
