So...got a phone call from my brother tonight. My mom's in the hospital again -- congestive heart failure. The bro says she hasn't been eating and has been skipping her meds, and her legs basically swelled up due to water retention. The last couple of times this happened, a cancer diagnosis followed swiftly thereafter. Mom turned 93 last week, so the odds that they would do surgery this time are kind of crappy. (Plus, every time she gets anesthesia, she slides a little further into dementia -- so I'm not sure I want her under the knife again, in any case.)
Anyway, the bro says she'll probably be in the hospital through the weekend, and then she'll go into a care facility, and then we'll see. Chances are really good that she won't be going back to the ol' homestead -- she needs to live with somebody (to make sure she eats and takes her pills). And there's no way she'd put up with a live-in aide; she barely lets the visiting nurses in the door. She may end up living here with me yet....
Anyway, thanks for listening.
I'm sorry, ali. I lost my dad to cancer last month, so I know what you're going through. It's a tough road. My dad never went to a hospital at the end or anything. My stepmom had hospice come by every week. I'm 100% positive it was the best thing for him. Anyway, if you ever need someone to talk about it with, you can always PM me.
Snow ruined my plans for today, so I haven't been in a good mood.

My brother came home from the hospital today, finally with a diagnosis - hyper-parathyroidism. They're probably going to have to do some radiation on his thyroid and then he'll have to be on a list of meds for the rest of his life, but at least it's treatable. Poor guy got scoped from every direction and treated like a pincushion, but, he'll be better for it now.
A very big thank you to everyone who sent their well-wishes and concerns, namely; MsMary, Sea, Lucimay, Menolly, Lyr, KiGirl, Jaz, and Ali, and everyone else, THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Ali, I'm so very sorry to hear that your mother is so ill, you have my prayers and best wishes

Yay for all the good news and hugs to all who need them.
Lyr, it was kinda funny actually and I told Igor about it and Igor got all "Do you want me to ask him not to come back?" and I said, "Igor, I acted like I thought he was just kidding around and no, he's spent almost six grand in the last six months between his car and the wife's car. He can flirt all he wants because 1. it isn't going to get him anywhere and 2. he pays his bills." Igor thought that was pretty funny.

Y'know what? My sister just went through this, and due to cancer on her thyroid, they had to remove it. This seems to be getting more and more common, and I'm really starting to wonder why. I haven't heard of it for the first 30 years of my life (then again, I'm not a doctor nor run in circles with them), and suddenly a lot of people are having thyroid problems. The nicest thing about it is that I've never heard of anyone dying from it yet, and my sister is free and clear right now, as nasty as it was for her. But yes, will be taking medication for the rest of her life.

I feel pretty boggled. I was just watching the latest ep of
Torchwood, and part of the plot was
the incantation: Melenkurion abatha! Duroc minas... etc.
And I'm all, buh? No, really, did they just say that? And they said it over and over again.
Was this a deliberate tribute to SRD? I thought, well, maybe he got the words from an older source, so I've been googling around, but the only citations go right to Donaldson (with the exception of one forum where someone was ticked off on SRD's behalf and mad at the Torchwood writers for failing to provide attribution, heh).
**scratches head** So the Torchwood writers are SRD fans? Cool.
Unless he did get the words from an older source, in which case somebody please tell me because this is making me nuts.

I feel good. I did a deep post-winter clean on my bike, lubed it up, took a nice long shower, and am ready for it to be the weekend.
ONE MORE DAY.
I can make it.

Jwaneeta
There's a thread over in Gen SciFi where a bunch of us have been pondering that same question.

Thanks for the good wishes, all!

jwaneeta!!! I was just thinking about you a few minutes ago!! So very good to see you!
And Jaz. . . that's a worthy cause! I cut my hair off in October, but at 9 inches it wasn't quite long enough to donate.

And. . . now I'm growing it out again. The cut I thought would make me feel young and playful made me feel old instead. So I'm growing it out now.
