Really impressed by this live recording from the '96 Salzburg Festival. Amazed actually, considering I had been indifferent to Claudio Abbado's Beethoven prior to this. But Abbado has won me over. The Berlin Philharmonic is magnificent here: the sound is a llittle distant, but this still is one of the best modern recordings of Beethoven's 9th I've yet heard. This is a sturdy, solid performance of a musical work that often trips up the best conductors and orchestras. Abbado's interpretation more or less matches the quicker tempos of "authentic" period practice without giving up the weightiness of modern orchestral sound. So this is a nice alternative for those who like the authentic approach to Beethoven but dislike the "thin" sound of period instruments. Me, I've grown to love period instrument Beethoven, to the point where most modern renditions of the Symphonies now sound turgid to my ears. However, Abbado's live performance is lively enough that it compares well with my favorite period-style recordings. Bravo, Maestro!
