Take care or yourself, lorin. You may be without power, but when you think about the good vibes coming you're way, you know you got the comfort coming in from above: your line in the sky.

(I'm betting that relocation to Albequerque or any other desert town is looking more attractive this week, eh?)

*wave*, luci. Yeah, back. But not the same.

Glad to hear you're okay, lorin. Sending more good thoughts your way.

I've had a hell of a day. I'm still putting everything into context. Three things I have learned:

1. The alley right outside my door is a disturbing place at 3 AM.

2. Legal paperwork was designed to cause headaches.

3. If one cat is staring intently at something just above your head, it's being a typically weird cat, and what it's looking at can probably only be seen by cats. If three cats are staring intently at something just above your head, they're watching the giant spider that's about to drop into your hair.

Oh, a change is coming, feel these doors now closing

Bonus points if you told them, "Stop staring at me, guys - there's nothing there!"

Yeah. They're gonna be snickering all night.

SORUS!!! That gave me the total freaky shaking heebie jeebies. I have severe arachnophobia.

Lorin! Glad you are ok baby girl! Wayfriend, way to treat the kids to a "great adventure."

I had an interesting day at work. My nemesis's close last night was awful and he had TWO extra people because of our impending visit from 3 VIP's. I am closing tomorrow which is actually the day before the visit but he got extras to get some of the chore list done that Ashlee gave us. I even took the guesswork out of it for him. I told him what to assign and to whom and admonished him to please follow up. He did nothing. I got in and checked the assignments I had mapped out for his closing crew and NOT ONE had been done. I was annoyed since that means that during the course of my day today and on my agenda for tomorrow I have to get them done. I was working with Ashlee and chatting and she asked me what happened last night since the close was worse than normal with two extra people. I said, "I am annoyed too because I HANDED a game plan to Edward, taking all the thought and effort, assigned jobs to people and asked him to follow up just before I left and NOTHING I asked got done." She shook her head. She went on a bit of a rampage about how it's things like this that are never going to get him promoted if he can't even handle a simple closing with an oversized staff. Apparently he's been bitching about not being promoted yet. She even went on to say that it was a mistake hiring him as an assistant from outside the company. He shouldn't even be that. I didn't even have the heart to tell her of his latest "treating me like his bitch" story. I think I'll treat her to that tomorrow even though she's gone the week after me. And yes, even though I won't be sorry to be shut of him I am sorry that she and I are both leaving the crew open to his unchecked laziness and obnoxiousness, especially Seth who will take up the slack and bear the brunt of it all. I feel a bit guilty about that.

I will tell the story someday but not tonight. Sorus, tormenting Derek is looking like hella fun and simple child's play.

They probably did. These guys are too lazy to catch bugs, so that was purely for entertainment value on their part. Probably betting one another as to how far I would jump.

hi

Report from the far side......or should I say wet side.

I got into the house today. It's bad but not as bad as my neighbors. My house is 4 feet up which saved much of the house. I lost the furnace, the pool filter, the sump pumps burned out, the wood on the wrap around needs to be replaced, everything in the shed is ruined, the lawn mower, the power washer, the freezer. One ceiling is damaged, lost all my food. But it is just stuff. My neighbors are much more damaged. Many lost everything. I never realized the kind of damage water can do. This was salt water, very corrosive. It is a very weird atmosphere. Everyone is just hauling out their entire life's stuff......all gone. And the town stinks. Hot and humid, smelling like dead fish and mildew.

Well, I have a decision to make. I had no flood insurance. The question is do I spend my money to make the repairs in hopes that the house will sell or do I just give the house to the bank.

And Wayfriend......
(I'm betting that relocation to Albequerque or any other desert town is looking more attractive this week, eh?)
Oh yeah, you are not kidding!!!

Thank you everyone for all these positive vibes. I don't think you realize how important the support is to me.
The loudest truth I ever heard was the softest sound.

Magickmaker votes to give it to the bank. ;) Honestly, I'd be very tempted to do the same. That kind of damage is going to cost thousands to fix, just for the new sump pumps and furnace alone.

A *ceiling* got damaged?? How high did the water get, anyhow?

I mean, you're right, it's all just stuff, and stuff can always be replaced. But still. Wow. |G

Oh, lorin. I'm so sorry to hear that this happened. Yeah, it could have been worse. Yeah, it's just stuff. But I wouldn't want to downplay how hard this must be on you and your fam. But I can promise that time, even just a few days, makes a big difference, and things will be better. Be strong, and don't give up.

Time to whine.

About a month ago, I woke up one morning with a stiff thumb. It would pop when I tried to bend it, and then it would pop back when I tried to straighten it. I thought it was arthritis at first, and then the base of my thumb started to hurt. Well, last week, I finally got around to looking online for the cause. It's called "trigger finger", and it happens when nodules occur on the tendon, right where the tendon slides under a sheath of tissue at the base of the finger/thumb. It's the ball of crap popping back and forth under the sheath that causes the popping.

So I went to the doc on Tuesday. She said to try massive doses of ibuprofen for a week and see if that helps, and in the meantime, make an appointment with an orthopedist. So owing to insurance card snafus, today was the first day I was able to connect with the orthopedist. I can't get in until early October.

The stuff I saw online about treatment for this said painkillers won't do much of anything. Immobilizing the joint works -- but then you can't use your hand. Apparently the only really effective treatment is: (1) a cortisone shot (which I'm told hurts -- oh goody), and if that doesn't do it, then (2) surgery.

Typing is okay and knitting (oddly enough) is okay. Holding a pen, tho -- that's interesting. I have to stop and cock my thumb before I pick up the pen....

You might want to see if there is a physical therapy approach to that, ali. That is how I overcame the "frozen shoulder" I had a couple years ago -- also caused by accumulated deposits in a joint.

Good thought, SD. The orthopedist has a physical therapy practice, as well. I'm sure they'll recommend PT if it would be helpful. But first I've gotta get in to see the guy....

Seriously though, having to wait until October to have it looked at is absurd. Not particularly surprising, but absurd.

I feel like running away. Even just temporarily. I need to get out of my own head, gain some perspective about where I'm going and what I'm doing.

I totally ruined my former tech dept and soon to be current again tech department manager's day. I called my new store to get my schedule for next week and he was outraged and apparently knew NOTHING of my transfer. He sounded horrified/pissed off and slightly wounded yet belligerent all at the same time. I think it's funny that he didn't know since it's been in the works for almost two weeks now.

Work had it's ups mostly but some little downs. I had a last day of working with some people that I am really going to miss today. Lots of hugs and I almost cried a little when Vivian dropped me at the train station. Vivian is the one who reminds me of Julie when we were in college. The ups were great though. We had our bigwig visit today and we passed with stellar colors. I got a text later from Ashlee that said, "Awesome job with recovery!!! The store looked amazing!" Ashlee is picky so she doesn't give praise that high unless it was actually amazing so YAY to me and my team. I showed the text to the people who helped last night that were also working tonight. I also heard from Tony that one of the bigwigs said it was the nicest cleanest store they had ever been in and were significantly impressed and kept commenting during the walk about how it looked more like a showroom than a working store. I was gratified to hear about that since I spent the better part of the last two days detailing displays and cabinets and dusting and cleaning like a madwoman and even went so far as to make sure that not one single item on any tech display had one single fingerprint on it. I am going to miss that store for a lot of reasons other than the people as well. It's a huge store with room to spare and Ashlee runs a tight ship and it's easy to make it look good. As Sorus knows, the store I am going back to has many handicaps. It's the fifth smallest store in the nation. It caters to the financial district of SF so it has picky rich customers but not a lot of choice on the shelves because of it's tiny size. It constantly struggles with it's sales numbers because it is so small and specialized and it's also the dump store for upper management. As soon as a manager position opens anywhere else they yank the manager from that store and put them where the lack is. Therefore the store manager is different almost every six months and they come in thinking they can fix it and change it and the staff has to re-learn a whole new manager and then boom, gone again. It's hard to create stability with so much flux. Of course I will already have Derek trying to undermine me but hey, I can already handle Derek and also the new assistant Kin is one of Jacob's fan club so he's already been told to let me have a lot of leeway and reign. Should be interesting.

Anyway, enough babbling.... one more day of commuting on Saturday and (cue up ACDC) I'm BACK... I'm BACK in the CITY again....

Tomorrow I am off so I am going to do laundry and I am meeting up with a friend close by the new store so I will probably just pop in to see if I can catch Kin and get my schedule.
Now if I could just find a way to wear live bees as jewelry all the time.....
