I'm not a huge fan of modern art, either, altho I love Calder -- what a sense of humor! And I like the ones by Rothko that I've seen at the National Gallery, the color contrast and their sheer size.
I get what Mondrian is doing, but I'm not wild about the result. But that's just me -- YMMV.
