Heh. I don't remember much debauchery in pitch's thread.

I noticed that- I think I read MM's post wrong- I was thinking the meant that it got locked d/t certain p0rn elements, but I re-read his post and saw the reference to circular arguments that go round and round. Those I did find in Pitch's thread... in abundance! Not feeling very philosophical this am, so I think I'll go do laundry. BB all. Maybe I'll actually try to un-derail this thread later!

Ahh, Jem- I was hooked from the first paragraph on the web page you linked us to. Sounds just like me!!!!!!!!! I'm going to try to make it. Seriously.

I'm equally embarassed to admit that I do know this: SCA stands for Society for Creative Anachronism. It's a big geek-fest where folk dress up in period costumes and beat the hell out each other with swords while spouting bad Merchant Ivory dialogue. It's also one helluva lot of fun!

OH! It sounds fabulous!

And this festival sounds even more fabulous! I can drink mead, defend someone's honor, and then head for the bonfires!

I should have recognized that acronym, they often (though not always) have a pavilion at renaissance faires. They seem to have changed somewhat in the last 20 years since I was first exposed to them in college. At that time, they did like to dress up in period costumes etc, but it didn't seem to have the emphasis on violence that I see these days. Nowadays, they seem to really focus on recreation of medieval fighting and dueling and really get into it.

I tend to be more interested by the more balanced non-SCA guilds, focusing on various crafts and other types of period recreation - including battles, but also including royal feasts, pageants, etc.

The emphasis on violence was probably mine -- SCA events still include plenty of crafts, food, and entertainment. (I like the morality plays: One of my favorites was a retelling of "Robinne Hode," in which the lead actor made his entrance shouting, "Bring me the head of this Kevin of Costner!")

Regardless, actual violence is kept to a minimum - even the most dramatic enactments are about as dangerous as an enthusiastic game of Cops n' Robbers.

Well, as far as I'm concerned, the key phrase for this Starwood Festival is clothing-optional!

No, I was quoting from observation of their activities at the local Renn. Faires. Definitely more fighting/battle oriented than most of the other guilds. I am sure that there activities are much more varied, however, outside of the renn. faires.

Well, I don't know. Though they wear armor, they really go at each other. Unlike the other guild's battle recreations which are mostly staged, the SCA guys (at least around here) really whomp on each other !
