Ah, One of Lovecraft's best. If you like that try the Dunwich Horror or Rats in the Walls next. Both are great and chilling.
Although not exactly fantasy, I just read Watership Down for the first time and absolutely loved it.

Quite a while.
Martin is not done writing it yet...the booksellers keep setting release dates, but they are all bogus until the man finishes...from the spoilers I've seen, he is taking his time and doing a great job, though...should be a wonderful book!

reading Hyperion by Dan Simmons, after the series getting recommendation on the forum. It's excellent. Very clever and has got me gripped. Plan to read all the series ( 4 I believe?) and then I have the new CLive Barker (Coldheart Canyon) lined up. THen plan to re read the chronicles in time for the first of the 3rd to come out.
Sorted out then!

Murrin,
Now that you've read both Jordan and GRR Martin I'd be intereted in your take on each series...As you probably know based upon my posts, I personally think that Martin's series is a cut above Jordan but everyone has different tastes. What are your thoughts?

HEEEELLLP! I just cannot seem to finish "The Grand Eclipse". I have read loads of books since I started it, but I cannot seem to read more than a few pages of it at at time.
Just finished "Dead Until Dark". Described as a southern vampire story. It was good. Wonder if the followups will be as good.

Zelazny's
Jack of Shadows which is creative, bizarre, and has a lot of things that remind me of Russian myths and fairy tales in it.

I tried readingsome other fantasy recently, but was very much unimpressed. I think SRD has ruined me for all other writers. I don't even like Tolkien much anymore!
But I did read the two Wishing Chair books recently and THEY were fun
though only as a blast from the past. I need to get the Faraway Tree etc for future reading.

I looked for Jack of Shadows for ages before I found a copy, but it was certainly worth the wait. I did not see a lot of similarities to russian stuff there, but then I know next to nothing about that.
I you like russian stuff you might like C.J. Cherryh's trilogy: Rusalka, Chernevog, Yvgenie (might be a different order) which features elements from russian folklore more prominently.

Ryzel, some of the things that reminded me of Russian folktales, etc.:
a soul kept in an inanimate object, outside of the owner's body
a princess who has been kidnapped away from her true love by an evil sorceror and been placed under a spell so she loves the kidnapper
a wise old woman/hag with healing spells, etc.
I really enjoyed that book, and Yes, it was VERY VERY hard to find a copy!! I wish someone would reprint it along with some of other Zelazny's good stuff like Creatures of Light and Darkness and A Night from the Lonesome October!
I am reading a Zelazny short story collection (Doors of his Mouth, Lamps of his Eyes) and a horror novel by Dan Simmons (Summer of Night) right now...
