I've seen parts of that film, safetyjedi, including the ending. One of the few things I've found almost too hard to watch.

You are right it is very disturbing. I am glad my kids were not watching...

Pffft, child's play. Watch Irreversible, and it will humble all that stuff. It's not disturbing--it's soul-shattering.

The Barnes & Noble sale was so good I got several movies I've never seen. Any comments on these?
Heaven - Cate Blanchett and Giovanni Ribisi
Catherine the Great - Catherine Zeta-Jones
Kinsey - Liam Neeson
The Missing - Cate Blanchett

The Missing holds it's own great acting from Jones and Blanchett save a storyline weak in one or two places. The incredible New Mexico landscapes and a certian cameo are worth it just for that!

A certain cameo, Danlo? Who would that be?

Well, he lives in NM and played a fabulous character in a well known western.

Also at the sale I got Death on the Nile and the Hayley Mills version of That Darn Cat! It was such fun to watch those again. I think I might even spring for Hayley Mills' The Parent Trap.

The Missing was OK. Decent action but the plot wasn't the most amazing ever.
I just bought The Life of David Gale a couple of days ago.

That's ok, I don't watch Cate Blanchett movies for the plot, I watch them for the acting.
On the other hand, there are The Shipping News, Bandits, and Pushing Tin. Movies I would have bought even if Blanchett wasn't in them being brilliant as always.

I just got Sideways. I loved it. It is a grower. I certainly wouldn't have said it is hysterical though, which is the adjective one of my friends applied to it.

Watching Star Wars ep 3 - about a 1/4 of the way through, now.
Yeah, I'm a bad, evil person - I downloaded it, thereby robbing George Lucas of almost 50 cents...

I had a 25% off coupon for a dvd bought at Borders that expired yesterday. Unfortunately I didn't get paid until today so I didn't take advantage of the offer.

I have a $35 coupon for Suncoast. I'm going to use it toward the 3rd season of La Femme Nikita. Luxurious shopping trip planned, to start next week's vacation.
(To make up for paying off my dentist bill last month.)

I blew my budget on the DVD set a few years ago, but Cosmos was worth it. A lot of fond memories there...
Did some impulse buying (heh, my weakness) when I found 3 film favorites at bargain prices: Patriot Games, Sneakers and Where Eagles Dare.
I immediately liked Where Eagles Dare the first time I saw it on TV years ago. The pacing of the action is superb, and all the actors are interesting to watch. Really, this movie did just about everything right, and overall it holds up well today--it's still superior to a lot of the dumb action flicks around these days. It was great to finally see this long-time favorite on DVD: the picture is crisp and clean--a
very nice restoration job! The sound is adequate, but obviously it can't match the deep bass and surround soundfield of modern soundtracks. I also liked the theatrical trailer: cool opening with the eagle silhouette.

The 10-minute making-of featurette is a nice little bonus, though I wish they could've provided an updated behind-the-scenes documentary or even audio commentary. It's sad when they don't bother taking advantage of all that the DVD format has to offer, especially for a great movie such as this.
I love Patriot Games in the same way I love Where Eagles Dare: the intelligent pacing of the action, and the interesting characters. The Jack Ryan movies also stand apart from run-of-the-mill dumb action movies out there (though I haven't seen The Sum of All Fears because I can't stand Ben Affleck). The picture quality of Patriot Games is excellent, as expected, but it's in the sound department that this DVD really rules. I haven't checked out its Dolby Digital track, but the DTS surround sound is marvelous. It shakes my room with the best of 'em!
Sneakers: a great gem of a caper movie. Very enjoyable ensemble acting from Robert Redford, Sidney Poitier, Dan Akroyd, Mary McDonnell, David Strathairn, Ben Kingsley and the late River Phoenix. What an awesome cast! The DVD is okay, and it does have audio commentary by director Phil Alden Robinson. But surprisingly, there is only a Dolby Surround (Pro Logic) track, with no 5.1 audio. Not that it's necessary for a film to have one, of course.

I LOVE Where Eagles Dare.
