Come on now, you were swooning from the combination of key lime goodness and Southern charm.

Worth area BTW) stayed in one during E-fest I and had no complaints--they're usually around 50 bucks a night...(Too bad the Desert Palms shut down, that's just down the street from my house which played the part of The Palms motel in El Paso in No Country for Old Men)
we have a winner at $50 - informed my captain at work i need the time off. so the wheels are in motion.

He'd probably eat Mani too.
I've been thinking about how I'm going to do this. I'm pretty much set on taking the week before and the week after off. It's the getting there part, and the Mani part that are the points to ponder.
If I drive, I'd leave Monday or Tuesday and get to Albuquerque on Wednesday or Thursday. Afterwards, I'm thinking of going north to Yellowstone after Elohimfest and heading east from there through the Black Hills.
That leaves the Mani part, I'm tempted to bring him; keeping him in a kennel or having someone watch him for the better part of two weeks is a pain. He's good in the car, but not good on a leash, plus, Yellowstone isn't a place for a Boston Terrier.
That brings up the other alternative travel plan. I was looking at Amtrak to go out. The Southwestern Chief goes through Albuquerque from Chicago. It's a 26 hour train ride. I haven't figured out Amtrak's pricing though. Going out, it quotes me $512 with a sleeper from Chicago, but on the return it's only about $325. So, I may fly out and take the train back home and only be gone from home for six days.
Plus I have other ongoing issues that might impact my budget or plans but haven't been resolved yet. Clarity, I need clarity!

And you came *here* for it? What were you thinking?
That's a very cool drive you're thinking of doing. The Black Hills are great -- you'd of course have to stop and see how the Crazy Horse project is moving along.
But I can also see the appeal of flying out and taking the train back. Amtrak's pricing is weird, you're right. I too was seeing differing prices on the outbound vs. the return. I think it has to do with demand, and with which day of the week you're traveling, and gods know what else.

If you're going to do Amtrak, tho, book soon -- prices go up the closer you are to your departure date. But *definitely* get a sleeper car. It's a great experience. Plus the ticket includes lodging and your meals in the dining car, so it's not as pricey as it looks at first glance. And it beats the hell out of sitting up all night in Coach.

The Malazan Book of the Fallen and
A Song of Ice and Fire and the HBO
Game of Thrones series during dinner. that oughta do it!

Luci & Creator -- I didn't ask because I assumed you were coming.

And I would've been really sad if either of you didn't come...

becareful of what you wish for Wagaga. The last time I sat with lucimay she tried throwing herself off a cliff , then drove off into the sunset , never to be seen again...yet I was totally unable to get p.o.'d at her.

They say that those who do get p.o.'d at her don't live long enough to tell the tale.

You mean Lucimay on one side? Maybe Waddley on the other side? Me right smack in the middle? Uhn-hn. Too dangerous. So long. When a man's got WGD$ in his pocket he begins to appreciate peace.

Trip was priced under 400 last month, 750 now. The forecast is not good for me.

Damn. Keep looking, lorin -- prices for June may drop next month (60 days out).
