...it's been far too quiet here in this thread.
My fav song off U2's new album:
I tied myself with wire
To let the horses run free
Playing with the fire
Until the fire played with me
The stone was semi precious
We were barely conscious
Two souls too smart to be
In the realm of certainty
Even on our wedding day
We set ourselves on fire
A girl could not deny her
Its not if I believe in love
If love believes in me
Oh believe in me
At the moment of surrender
I'm falling to my knees
I did not notice the passers by
And they did not notice me
I’ve been in every black hole
At the alter of a Dark star
My body s now begging
Though it’s begging to get back
Begging to get back
To my heart
To the rhythm of my soul
To the rhythm of my consciousness
To the rhythm of yes
To be released from control
I was punching in the numbers at the ATM machine
I could see in the reflection
A face staring back at me
At the moment of surrender
A vision of a visibility
I did notice the passers by
And they did not notice me
I was speeding off the subway
Through the stations of the cross
Every eye looking every other way
Counting down till the pain will stop
At the moment of surrender
A vision of a visibility
I did not notice the passers by
And they did not notice me

One of my all time favourite songs, although I'm not all that into Pink Floyd. This song was released shortly before the publication of The Wounded Land. I've always imagined that Dave Gilmour read the first chronicles and was inspired to write these lyrics:
SHORT AND SWEET
You asked what is the quality of life?
Seeking to justify the part you play
And hide, fearing it incomplete, to try
To make it any more or less the short and sweet
But short, short is from you to me, as close
As we all hope to try to make it be
We're caught watching the darkening sky, who knows?
Helpless as time itself to hold the time of day
And you, you are a fantasy, a view
From where you'd like to think the world should see
Be true and you will likely find a few
Building a vision doing justice to our time
And we, we the immoral men, we dare
Naked and fearless in the elements
And free, carefree of tempting fate, aware
And holding off the moral nightmare at the gates
And sweet, sweet as a mountain stream, we'll look
Toward a new day breaking in the east
We'll meet as every future dream unfolds
And surely quality that is the very least
SHORT AND SWEET
You asked what is the quality of life?
Seeking to justify the part you play
And hide, fearing it incomplete, to try
To make it any more or less the short and sweet
But short, short is from you to me, as close
As we all hope to try to make it be
We're caught watching the darkening sky, who knows?

This flower is scorched
This film is on
On a maddening loop
These clothes
These clothes don't fit us right
I'm to blame
It's all the same
It's all the same
You come to me with the phone in your hand
You come to me with your hair curled tight
You come to me with positions
You come to me with excuses
Decked out out in a robe
You wear me out
You wear me out
We've been through fake-a-breakdown
Self hurt
Plastics, collections
Self help, self pain,
EST, psychics, f*ck all
I was central
I had control
I lost my head
I need this
I need this
A paper weight, junk garage
Winter rain, a honey pot
Crazy, all the lovers have been tagged
A hotline, a wanted add
It's crazy what you could've had
It's crazy what you could've had
It's crazy what you could've had

Neko Case - This Tornado Loves You
My love, I am the speed of sound
I left the motherless, fatherless
Their souls dangling inside out from their mouths
But it's never enough
I want you
Carve your name across three counties
Ground it in with bloody hides
Their broken necks will lie in the ditch
Till you stop it, stop it, stop it, stop it
Stop this madness
I want you
I have waited with a glacier's patience
Smashed every transformer with every trailer
Till nothing was standing
Sixty five miles wide
Still you are nowhere, still you are nowhere
Nowhere in sight
Come out to meet me
Run out to meet me
Come into the light
Climb the boxcars to the engine
Through the smoke and to the sky
Your rails have always outrun mine
So I picked them up and crashed them down
In a moment close to now
Cause I miss, I miss, I miss, I miss
I miss, I miss, I miss, I miss
How you'd sigh yourself to sleep
When I'd rake the springtime
Across your sheets
My love, I am the speed of sound
I left the motherless, fatherless
Their souls dangling inside out from their mouths
But it's never enough
My love, I'm an owl on the sill
In the evening
But morning finds you
Still warm and breathing
This tornado loves you
What will make you believe me?
My love, I am the speed of sound
I left the motherless, fatherless
Their souls dangling inside out from their mouths
But it's never enough
I want you
Carve your name across three counties
Ground it in with bloody hides
Their broken necks will lie in the ditch

Aimee Mann..forgot all about her, if it's the same as the Mann from 'Til Tuesday. If it is "Voices Carry" (or maybe it was called "Hush Hush"..you fans know what one I mean.)
Anyway a band, there were so many that weekend, and it was so long ago and I was so not ordinary in consciouness, but I think it was "Gangrene" (guess what kind of music they play) did a cover of it in concert...don't know if they recorded it or not...it wasn't what you'd call 'musical', but it was still scary good. [Same weekend, I think, different town, whoever recorded "Walk Like an Egyptian" turned that piece of radio schmaltz into a live piece
that would make Pink Floyd say "wow...they're depressed" [and I mean that as a compliment].
Anyway, great first verse, from who I don't recall:
"I hear the taxi, feel the rush hour,
Life smells like sheep in wolves clothing
Marching off to war.
Taste tears in rain fall
Can't touch a heart beat
Bedrock laughs forever pounding out our time.

Cruxshadows, Winterborn
Dry your eyes and quietly bear
this pain with pride
For heaven shall remember the
silent and the brave
And promise me they will never see,
the fear within our eyes
(my eyes are closed)
We will give strength to
those who still remain
So bury fear, for fate draws near
And hide the signs of pain
With noble acts, the bravest souls
Endure the heart's remains
Discard regret, that in this debt
A better world is made
That children of a newer day might remember
And avoid our fate
And in the fury of this darkest hour
We will be your light
You've asked me for my sacrifice
And I am Winter born
Without denying, a faith is come
That I have never known
I hear the angels call my name
And I am Winter born
Hold your head up high-for
there is no greater love
Think of the faces of the people you defend
(you defend)
And promise me, they will never see
the tears within our eyes
(my eyes are closed)
Although we are men,
with mortal sins,
angels never cry
So bury fear, for fate draws near
And hide the signs of pain
With noble acts, the bravest souls
Endure the heart's remains
Discard regret, that in this debt
A better world is made
That children of a newer day might remember
And avoid our fate
And in the fury of this darkest hour
We will be your light
You've asked me for my sacrifice
And I am Winter born
Without denying, a faith in God
That I have never known
I hear the angels call my name
And I am Winter born
And in the fury of this darkest hour
I will be your light
A lifetime for this destiny
For I am Winter born
And in this moment..I will not run
It is my place to stand
We few shall carry hope
Within our bloodied hands
(bloodied hands)
And in our Dying, we're more
alive-than we have ever been
I've lived for these few seconds
For I am Winter born
And in the fury of this darkest hour
We will be the light
You've asked me for my sacrifice
And I am Winter born
Without denying, a faith in man
That I have never known
I hear the angels call my name
And I am Winter born
Within this moment now
I am for you, though better men have failed
I will give my life for love
For I am Winter born
And in my dying
I'm more alive, than I have ever been
I will make this sacrifice

It'd take you a long time to blow up or shoot all the sheep in this country, but one diseased banana...could kill 'em all.
I didn't even know sheep ate bananas.

Billy Bragg 'A New England'
I was twenty one years when I wrote this song
Im twenty two now, but I wont be for long
People ask when will you grow up to be a man
But all the girls I loved at school
Are already pushing prams
I loved you then as I love you still
Tho I put you on a pedestal,
They put you on the pill
I dont feel bad about letting you go
I just feel sad about letting you know
I dont want to change the world
Im not looking for a new england
Im just looking for another girl
I dont want to change the world
Im not looking for a new england
Im just looking for another girl
I loved the words you wrote to me
But that was bloody yesterday
I cant survive on what you send
Every time you need a friend
I saw two shooting stars last night
I wished on them but they were only satellites
Is it wrong to wish on space hardware
I wish, I wish, I wish youd care
I dont want to change the world
Im not looking for a new england
Im just looking for another girl
The bit in bold always makes me chuckle!

"Let us be lovers we'll marry our fortunes together"
"I've got some real estate here in my bag"
So we bought a pack of cigarettes and Mrs. Wagner pies
And we walked off to look for America
"Kathy," I said as we boarded a Greyhound in Pittsburgh
"Michigan seems like a dream to me now"
It took me four days to hitchhike from Saginaw
I've gone to look for America
Laughing on the bus
Playing games with the faces
She said the man in the gabardine suit was a spy
I said "Be careful his bowtie is really a camera"
"Toss me a cigarette, I think there's one in my raincoat"
"We smoked the last one an hour ago"
So I looked at the scenery, she read her magazine
And the moon rose over an open field
"Kathy, I'm lost," I said, though I knew she was sleeping
I'm empty and aching and I don't know why
Counting the cars on the New Jersey Turnpike
They've all gone to look for America
All gone to look for America
All gone to look for America

thats one of my all-time favorite paul simon songs!!!
you're more advanced than a cockroach,
have you ever tried explaining yourself
to one of them?
~ alan bates, the mothman prophecies
i've had this with actors before, on the set,
where they get upset about the [size of my]
trailer, and i'm always like...take my trailer,
cause... i'm from Kentucky
and that's not what we brag about.
~ george clooney, inside the actor's studio
a straight edge for legends at
the fold - searching for our
lost cities of gold. burnt tar,
gravel pits. sixteen gears switch.
Haphazard Lucy strolls by.

It's one of the only S&G songs (or solo Simon) that Simon really sings on. Ever since I was a kid, that song has always been like a gut punch to me.

I can only handle so much of the music [that one is one of the good ones] but lyrically the man is brilliant.

Lester-Crowded House
Saw my life go flashing past
In the eyes of a faithful friend
Four legs four lives
And the screeching tyres never seem to end
I will change if Lester lives
Not mess him round just cause I own him
He was nearly wiped away
But he had good luck and strong bones
you make me clench my teeth
Us humans ain't got dignity
Eat my plants and steal my things
You're the head of security
I will change if Lester lives
Not mess him round just cause I own him
He was nearly wiped away
But he had good luck and strong bones
Inside and behind him
I will change if Lester lives
Not mess him round
Just cause I own him.
Saw my life go flashing past
In the eyes of a faithful friend
Four legs four lives
And the screeching tyres never seem to end
I will change if Lester lives
Not mess him round just cause I own him
He was nearly wiped away
But he had good luck and strong bones

It'd take you a long time to blow up or shoot all the sheep in this country, but one diseased banana...could kill 'em all.
I didn't even know sheep ate bananas.
I didn't even know sheep ate bananas.

Meat Loaf, A Kiss Is A Terrible Thing To Waste
If you listen to the night you can hear the darkness fall
I can barely stand the wait, i can barely stand at all
Come on closer to me now, like we're sharing the same skin
We gotta get out of this jail, we gotta let the future in
So many things in your life that you're bound to regret
Why didn't i do that? why didn't i do this?
So many chances you've lost that you never forget
Why didn't i make it? why didn't i take it right then?
The loneliest words you'll ever know if only, if only it was so
The emptiest words that there'll ever be
It could've been me, it could've been me
The loneliest words you'll ever know if only, if only it was so
The emptiest words that there'll ever be
It could've been me, it could've been me
You'll have to pay for it later
If you don't get it while it's going for free
Believe me, believe me
A kiss is a terrible thing to waste
A kiss is a terrible thing to waste
It's something that's always been so
A kiss is a terrible thing to waste
A kiss is a terrible thing to waste
And one of these nights i'm gonna show you that you already know
There's a feast waiting for you and you've never even gotten a taste
It's later than you think and a kiss is a terrible thing to waste
You shouldn't tremble when they touch there's no reason for these fears
It's a promise that was made, we've been promised this for years
I want to show you it all, what to do and where and how
'cause we'll never be as young as we are right now
Never be as young as we are right now
So many cries in the night that you try to ignore
Why didn't i do this? why didn't i do that?
So many un-answered prayers, so many un-opened doors
Why didn't i take it? why didn't i make it come true?
The loneliest words you'll ever know if only, if only it was so

It could've been me, it could've been me

Tire tracks and broken hearts, that's all we're leaving behind
It doesn't matter what we lose, it only matters what we're going to find
Tire tracks and broken hearts, that's all we're leaving behind
It doesn't matter what we lose, it only matters what we're going to find
Tire tracks and broken hearts, that's all we're leaving behind
(let's get away from the past)
It doesn't matter what we lose, it only matters what we're going to find

you're more advanced than a cockroach,
have you ever tried explaining yourself
to one of them?
~ alan bates, the mothman prophecies
i've had this with actors before, on the set,
where they get upset about the [size of my]
trailer, and i'm always like...take my trailer,
cause... i'm from Kentucky
and that's not what we brag about.
~ george clooney, inside the actor's studio
a straight edge for legends at
the fold - searching for our
lost cities of gold. burnt tar,
gravel pits. sixteen gears switch.
