I was watching the end of the Ashes cricket and for some reason they were playing Billy Bragg! It brought back some memories, so I thought I'd post an oldie...

I was twenty one years when I wrote this song
I'm twenty two now, but I won't be for long
People ask when will you grow up to be a man
But all the girls I loved at school
are already pushing prams

I loved you then as I love you still
Tho I put you on a pedestal,
They put you on the pill
I don't feel bad about letting you go
I just feel sad about letting you know

I don't want to change the world
I'm not looking for a new England
I'm just looking for another girl
I don't want to change the world
I'm not looking for a new England
I'm just looking for another girl

I loved the words you wrote to me
But that was bloody yesterday
I can't survive on what you send
Every time you need a friend

I saw two shooting stars last night
I wished on them but they were only satellites
Is it wrong to wish on space hardware
I wish, I wish, I wish you'd care

I don't want to change the world
I'm not looking for a new England
I'm just looking for another girl
(Looking for another girl)
(Looking for another girl)
(Looking for another gi-rl)

Good song. Billy is cool. Here's one of my favorite oldies of his.

Wish You Were Her
Billy Bragg

Theres a girl sleeping in my bed
And Im singing unwritten songs in my head
She provided bittersweet company
I confided how much you mean to me
And this time
Its gonna take a train to pull me through
Some brief distraction from your memory
Is all that I hoped that she might be
And as I let her warm her feet on me
Wish you were her

That I wanted you to be my wife
Is the worst kept secret of my life
Everyone knows, even my friend here
I've just whispered your name in her ear
And this time
Its gonna take a train to pull me through
Some brief distraction from your memory
Is all that I hoped that she might be
And as I ask her how she takes her tea
Wish you were her
Her
I wish you were her

The River
Garth Brooks

You know a dream is like a river
Ever changin' as it flows
And a dreamer's just a vessel
That must follow where it goes
Trying to learn from what's behind you
And never knowing what's in store
Makes each day a constant battle
Just to stay between the shores...and

I will sail my vessel
'Til the river runs dry
Like a bird upon the wind
These waters are my sky
I'll never reach my destination
If I never try
So I will sail my vessel
'Til the river runs dry

Too many times we stand aside
And let the waters slip away
'Til what we put off 'til tomorrow
Has now become today
So don't you sit upon the shoreline
And say you're satisfied
Choose to chance the rapids
And dare to dance the tide...yes

I will sail my vessel
'Til the river runs dry
Like a bird upon the wind
These waters are my sky
I'll never reach my destination
If I never try
So I will sail my vessel
'Til the river runs dry

There's bound to be rough waters
And I know I'll take some falls
But with the good Lord as my captain
I can make it through them all...yes

I will sail my vessel
'Til the river runs dry
Like a bird upon the wind
These waters are my sky
I'll never reach my destination
If I never try
So I will sail my vessel
'Til the river runs dry

Yes, I will sail my vessel
'Til the river runs dry
'Til the river runs dry

and now it's time for a little musical interlude by Sea. From My Fair Lady (but adapted for my own purposes so we'll call it "my fair man" ;) and heavily edit it). Going out there to the one whom fills that place in my heart....

Damn! Damn! Damn! Damn!
I've grown accustomed to his face.
He almost makes the day begin.
I've grown accustomed to the tune that
He whistles night and noon.
His smiles, his frowns,
His ups, his downs
Are second nature to me now;
Like breathing out and breathing in.
I was serenely independent and content before we met;
Surely I could always be that way again-
And yet
I've grown accustomed to his look;
Accustomed to his voice;
Accustomed to his face.

.....

But I'm so used to hear him say
"Good morning" ev'ry day.
His joys, his woes,
His highs, his lows,
Are second nature to me now;
Like breathing out and breathing in.
I'm very grateful he's a man
And so easy to forget;
Rather like a habit
One can always break-
And yet,
I've grown accustomed to the trace
Of something in the air;
Accustomed to his face.

Housemartins-Build

Clambering men in big bad boots
Dug up my den, dug up my roots.
Treated us like plasticine town
They build us up and knocked us down.

From Meccano to Legoland,
Here they come with a brick in their hand,
Men with heads filled up with sand,
It's build.

It's build a house where we can stay,
Add a new bit everyday.
It's build a road for us to cross,
Build us lots and lots and lots and lots.

Whistling men in yellow vans
They came and drew us diagrams.
Showed us how it all worked out
And wrote it down in case of doubt.

Slow, slow, quick, quick, quick,
It's wall to wall and brick to brick,
They work so fast it makes you sick,
It's build.

Down with sticks and up with bricks,
In with boots and up with roots,
It's in with suits and new recruits,
It's build

I never thought I'd hear a version of this song that I liked listening to more than Otis Redding's original. If you haven't heard it, you have to check out Sara Bareilles' live version on Between the Lines...her Filmore live album.

Sittin' in the mornin' sun
I'll be sittin' when the evenin' come
Watching the ships roll in
And then I watch 'em roll away again, yeah

I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Ooo, I'm just sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time

I left my home in Georgia
Headed for the 'Frisco bay
'Cause I've had nothing to live for
And look like nothin's gonna come my way

So I'm just gonna sit on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Ooo, I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time

Look like nothing's gonna change
Everything still remains the same
I can't do what ten people tell me to do
So I guess I'll remain the same, yes

Sittin' here resting my bones
And this loneliness won't leave me alone
It's two thousand miles I roamed
Just to make this dock my home

Now, I'm just gonna sit at the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Oooo-wee, sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time

Okay, right now, I'm in the twilight zone. My little brothers (Naeem, Ayize, and Stevie) and my wee sister Meggie are going around the house singing Rama Lama Bang Bang!! Some one save me!!! :?

Could a body close the mind out?
Stitch a seam across the eye?
If you can be good, you’ll live forever
If you’re bad, you’ll die when you die

Hearing only one true note
On the one and only sound
Unzip my body
Take my heart out
Cause I need a beat to give this tune…

Taking a picture of
Oh the body swayed to music
Oh the lightning glance
If I would give it all and all
Maybe you would hear me
Ask for half a chance

Hearing only one root note
Planted firmly in the ground
Undo my heart, unzip my body and
Lend to my ear a clear and a deafening sound

Unzip my heart
And if I need a rhythm
It’ll be to my heart I listen
If it don’t get me too far wrong

Everybody smile please
Nobody pay no mind to me
Finger in position on the switch
A little flash photography

Taking a picture of you
Taking a picture of
Taking a picture of me
Taking a picture

RAMALAMA Bang Bang
Flash Bang Big Bang
Bing Bong
Ding Dong
DUM DUM DO DUM DUM

With a hammer BANG BANG
Flash Bang Press Gang
Bing Bong
Ding Dom
Hum Hum H’ Hum

With a st’ stammer
B’ Bang Bang
Crash Bang
B’ Big Bang
Boing Boing
Boing Boing
Dom dom d’ dom

With a st’ stammer
With a st’ stammer
With a st’ stammer
B’ Bang Bang

Crash Bang
Big Bang
Bang Bang
Crash Bang

Unzip my heart
And if I need a rhythm
Gonna be to my heart I listen
And if I
And if I
Need a rhythm
Gonna be to my heart I listen

And if I
And if I
Need a rhythm
Need a rhythm
Need a rhythm

Of course the only verse they are singing is:

RAMALAMA Bang Bang
Flash Bang Big Bang
Bing Bong
Ding Dong
DUM DUM DO DUM DUM

Over and over and over and over and over....again...... :faint:

I couldn't find on Youtube The Dock of the Bay. But thank you for Sara. :D I've been listening to a couple of other songs from the Filmore recording. I love this one:

Time to tell me the truth
To burden your mouth for what you say
No pieces of paper in the way
Cause i cant continue pretending to choose
The opposite sides on which we fall
The loving you laters if at all
No right minds could wrong be this many times

My memory is cruel
Im queen of attention to details
Defending intentions if he fails
Until now, he told me her name
It sounded familiar in a way
I could have sworn i'd heard him say it ten thousand times
If only i had been listening

Leave unsaid unspoken
Eyes wide shut unopened
You and me
Always between the lines
Between the lines

I thought i thought i was ready to bleed
That we'd move from the shadows on the wall
And stand in the center of it all
Too late two choices to stay or to leave
Mine was so easy to uncover
He'd already left with the other
So i've learned to listen through silence

Leave unsaid unspoken
Eyes wide shut unopened
You and me always be
You and me always be

I tell myself all the words he surely meant to say
I'll talk until the conversation doesn't stay on
Wait for me i'm almost ready
When he meant let go

Leave unsaid unspoken
Eyes wide shut unopened
You and me
Always be
You and me
Always between the lines

Thanks Endy. I've never been a big fan of that song, but I like that version. Love her voice. I've had "Between the Lines" playing over and over again the last 24 hours. My partner is ready to kill me!

I love the control she has of her voice. Easily slipping from high notes to low notes and back again. Effortlessly or seemlingly so.

An apt song for today (perhaps for some months now). <sigh>

Thanks again, Endy, for Sara :)

Something always brings me back to you.
It never takes too long.
No matter what I say or do I'll still feel you here 'til the moment I'm gone.

You hold me without touch.
You keep me without chains.
I never wanted anything so much than to drown in your love and not feel your rain.

Set me free, leave me be. I don't want to fall another moment into your gravity.
Here I am and I stand so tall, just the way I'm supposed to be.
But you're on to me and all over me.

You loved me 'cause I'm fragile.
When I thought that I was strong.
But you touch me for a little while and all my fragile strength is gone.

Set me free, leave me be. I don't want to fall another moment into your gravity.
Here I am and I stand so tall, just the way I'm supposed to be.
But you're on to me and all over me.

I live here on my knees as I try to make you see that you're everything I think I need here on
The ground.
But you're neither friend nor foe though I can't seem to let you go.
The one thing that I still know is that you're keeping me down

...keeping me down...

...you're onto me, onto me and all over...

Something always brings me back to you.
It never takes too long.

I read a review of Sara B's album Little Voice..and the critic (that I read regularly and trust) said something like..i really didn't expect to like this album as much as I do. Especially after hearing the popular but all that impressive I"m Not Gonna Write You a Love Song. But this album and Sara's voice blows you away.

Even after reading that I was skeptical on first listen, but totally agree now. She is quite a talent. Glad you're enjoying her Sea!

Sea's song of the day!

I can't get no satisfaction
I can't get no satisfaction
'cause i try and i try and i try and i try
I can't get no, i can't get no

When i'm drivin' in my car
And that man comes on the radio
He's tellin' me more and more
About some useless information
Supposed to fire my imagination
I can't get no, oh no no no
Hey hey hey, that's what i say

I can't get no satisfaction
I can't get no satisfaction
'cause i try and i try and i try and i try
I can't get no, i can't get no

When i'm watchin' my tv
And that man comes on to tell me
How white my shirts can be
But he can't be a man 'cause he doesn't smoke
The same cigarrettes as me
I can't get no, oh no no no
Hey hey hey, that's what i say

I can't get no satisfaction
I can't get no girl reaction
'cause i try and i try and i try and i try
I can't get no, i can't get no

When i'm ridin' round the world
And i'm doin' this and i'm signing that
And i'm tryin' to make some girl
Who tells me baby better come back later next week
'cause you see i'm on losing streak
I can't get no, oh no no no
Hey hey hey, that's what i say

I can't get no, i can't get no
I can't get no satisfaction
No satisfaction, no satisfaction, no satisfaction

HEY HEY HEY...that's what Sea says!!!!!!!!

You didn't watch 20 to 1 last night by any chance did you Sea? Rock anthems or something and Satisfaction was on it. Unfortunately, the one that stuck in my head was I would do anything for love by Meatloaf, and it won't go away!!

Posted: Fri Aug 14, 2009 2:33 am

actually, I did end up watching some of it but I was rather intoxicated by then (and chatting on my laptop to a friend) so I can't actually remember what songs were on it...but maybe that's a good thing: if I had that Meatloaf song stuck in my head I'd probably go throw myself off a cliff...

...oh...oh...OH NO!!!!!!

...NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

......As long as the planets are turning, as long as the stars are burning
As long as your dreams are coming true, you better believe it

That I would do anything for love, and I'll be there til the final act
I would do anything for love, and I'll take a vow and seal a pact

But I'll never forgive myself if we don't go all the way tonight
And I would do anything for love, oh I would do anything for love
Oh I would do anything for love, but I won't do that, no I won't do that

I would do anything for love, anything you've been dreaming of
But I just won't do that....

RIGHT! That's it!! Cliff, here I come!

But I should end on a song!

Goodbye, cruel world,
Im leaving you today.
Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye.

Goodbye all you people,
Theres nothing you can say,
To make me change my mind.
Goodbye.

;)

 Sorry! Heh, some more Floyd to ease the pain!!

Another one they had was We will rock you! by Queen. Hopefully that will bring you back from the precipice - or tip you over, coz it's played to absolute death still on commercial stations. But at least it's Queen!

While we're on Queen, here's one of my old favourites:

Killer Queen
She keeps Moet et Chandon
In a pretty cabinet
'Let them eat cake' she says
Just like Marie Antoinette
A built-in remedy
For Khrushchev and Kennedy
At anytime an invitation
You can't decline

Caviar and cigarettes
Well versed in etiquette
Extraordinarily nice

She's a Killer Queen
Gunpowder, Gelatine
Dynamite with a laser beam
Guaranteed to blow your mind
Anytime

Recommended at the price
Insatiable an appetite
Wanna try?

To avoid complications
She never kept the same address
In conversation
She spoke just like a baroness
Met a man from China
Went down to Asia Minor
Then again incidentally
If you're that way inclined

Perfume came naturally from Paris
for cars she couldn't care less
Fastidious and precise

She's a Killer Queen
Gunpowder, Gelatine
Dynamite with a laser beam
Guaranteed to blow your mind
Anytime

Drop of a hat she's as willing as
Playful as a pussy cat
Then momentarily out of action
Temporarily out of gas
To absolutely drive you wild, wild
She's out to get you

Recommended at the price
Insatiable in appetite
Wanna try?
You wanna try.
