As Murrin said, (and as Lore himself has said), if you play a villian bent on world domination, you have to expect the people who don't want to be dominated to gang up on you. Just like multiple "evil" deities could gang up on the "good" ones. *shrug*
Yes, but in both versions of the game, eventually we ended up having one evil god and 8-12 good gods. Even though the evil god was more powerful than any single good god, the good gods united were far more powerful than he was, and thus if they "ganged up" upon him they'd easily vanquish him.

I'm working on an idea I had which should keep things balanced so that players who choose to make a character from the "unfavored side" (who risk being the ONLY evil deity in a pantheon of good deities, for example) will not be penalized for doing so in the long run. But of course, suggestions are appreciated.

Let us know what your idea is, and I'll give suggestions. ;)

Perhaps the very fact that evil gods seem to become so powerful so quickly is part of the problem?

If no single "good" god can beat an evil god (and his allies), is it any wonder that the "good" gods band together against him?

I really don't see people being interested if the balance is achieved by saying "You're not allowed to gang up on an evil god," y'know?

Well, it wasn't really fun for me. This game lost interest for me when I was facing the pantheon. So I guess Xar is entirely justified.

In saying you're not allowed to gang up on an evil god?

*shrug* I disagree. You choose the way your character acts, and to be honest, you seemed to be having quite a bit of fun when you were expecting to be victorious.

If you didn't want to face the Pantheon, there were others ways to play. Surely your choice of RPing style could have been expected to have that, or at least similar, results?

Oh, and don't get me wrong, you did the evil deity brilliantly. But were you expecting everybody to just role over and let you pick them off one by one or something?

You're missing the point. It ceased being fun. And besides, I think I adequately explained the why, and some of it is also private between Xar and myself. So drop it, okay?

You don't know the full story, okay? Leave it be.

No, that's not it.

Fine, I'll do that. Expect us to remain in disagreement over this particular issue then. ;)

Yes, we are. One week (although it actually will be nine or ten days, because I won't have computer access next weekend).
AllFather, while it is short notice, could we switch the deadline for the Contest entries to this weekend then? Or Monday or Tuesday?

I did not say I would forbid ganging up on a god - I just said that I'd think of a way to make things more balanced, ensuring that if evil only has one god and good has several, the battle can be balanced and evil's only choice isn't rolling over and dying before the wrathful host of the good gods. While your arguments are sound from a roleplaying point of view, in the interest of fairness and fun for all involved - players of evil deities included - a way to ensure that players in a "divine minority" still get a balanced chance to win (barring their behaviour and the whims of fate) is clearly needed.

The main problem would be to establish who belongs to which side: while we have clearly good and clearly evil gods, there are also neutral gods. But I did have an idea which should add another level of intrigue to the game - perhaps when Pantheon 3.0 enters the pipeline, you'll see what I mean.

EDIT: I forgot - O-gon-cho, I don't think the contest is going to be affected by the extended deadline... after all, even if players have to rethink their strategies, there's still lots of time for them to get a submission in. Of course, if most players want an extension on that deadline too I'll see what I can do, but otherwise I think the way it is right now is fine.

:wry grin:

I'm being misunderstood a lot lately. I wasn't asking to extend the contest deadline, I was asking if we could shorten it to this week, so we had something to work on this weekend and to look forward to this week.

8O

It's all happening isn't it?

LM: hope you reconsider, or at least perhaps consider some of those PMs I sent you a few turns back - they may be more apt now, or at least some sort of variation on that theme. There may be ways you can continue to be involved, in a less stressful way.
I know in the past I've thought about quitting the game as well - as you say, sometimes it gets so it's not fun any more. But at that time I took a step back, realised I was getting far too involved, spending most of my time thinking up wonderful schemes so that it really annoyed me when Xar didn't think they were as wonderful as I did!

Yek was never alone against us. Melirelle has been fighting with him for a while, and now Odal is his. I don't know what can be done other than that. We can't force players to play evil deities if they don't want to. It will always come down to more good than evil.

Well ... I don't know about THAT!!!

Argothoth can be EVIL ... Melirelle certainly can ... and Odal ... Maeror has laid claim to wickedness in the past (he IS the God of DEATH after all)! Who knows yet about the Fallen ...

I of course am NEUTRAL

Anyway...

I have a thought. I know it will be shot down, but let's do some brainstorming.

How about we do away with the "good" and "evil" domains. We can have Illusion, Mutation, Nature, Trade, Undead, Life, Death, etc. But not the ones that would, basically, tell what your morality is. No Love, Malice, Assassins... There seems little hope that the God of Malice is going to be working toward Peace. The God of Love isn't going to assassinate the other deities' prophets.

But the God of Forests might. :D And the God of Mutation might be trying to help all the other deities fulfill their dreams.

Threats by someone wouldn't be automatically taken seriously or dismissed. The deity's track record would be much more important. Someone who is helping everyone might actually be evil, and putting remote control bombs everywhere, to be exploded when everything is in readiness. Alliances would be important, and good or evil deities could be acting together, with the rest of the deities entirely unaware.

When Bhakti the 1st met Argothoth, he was nervous. But he asked Argothoth what the undead are like, and was delighted to learn that they could Love just like everybody else. :D
