March 7 is a holy day for me. The following come out for the first time in the US, and I'm getting all of 'em:

Howl's Moving Castle
My Neighbor Totoro
Whisper of the Heart

Anime masterpieces from studio Ghibli! I still need to get Spirited Away (seen it three times, though).

Last weekend TRC called my attention to the new release of Dune, David Lynch's theater version and the expanded version of the same production plus specials in the same package. I bought it Monday. Having watched the expanded version, I am reading the book for the umpteenth time, then plan to watch the Sci Fi channel version, the DVD specials, the theatrical version...

It looks like a Dune month.

I bought the new Dune DVD as well. The metal case is very, very nice.

Unfortunately, the disc itself isn't so nice. My copy has a horrible foul-up in the MPEG encoding: picture and sound start breaking up badly towards the end of Chapter 6, and my DVD player winds up skipping all of Chapter 7. I played the DVD in another machine and it did the same thing, so I know it's the disc that's defective, not the player.

This is the first time I've experienced such a stupendously defective commercial DVD. I'm just loathe to return it (got it at Best Buy). I hate dealing/arguing/negotiating with salespeople. I can think of much more productive things to do with my time (like just downloading the whole bloody movie off the internet, sheesh).

What's there to argue? It doesnt work. End of story. Return it because the store is obligated to sell you a working copy.

I filled in a few holes in my collection. It took a while but I finally bought THEY LIVE the other day featuring the longest staged fight in the history of cinema. Also picked up the Thomas Jane version of the Punisher. Shot on location here in Tampa Bay its kind of freaky seeing your own downtown area in a film. And finally The Truman Show.

The Truman Show is a favorite of mine.

I got a message that the store has Bringing Out the Dead waiting for me. No one stocks it -- it had to be special ordered.

I also recently bought the director's cut of Dune and hope to watch it very soon. :) I also got the movie version of one of my favorite Broadway plays - Rent.
Five hundrend twenty five thousand
six hundred minutes
Five hundrend twenty five thousand
moments so dear
Five hundrend twenty five thousand
six hundred minutes
How do you measure, measure a year

In daylight, sunsets, in midnights,
in cups of coffee, In inches, in miles
in laughter in strive,

In Five hundrend twenty five thousand
six hundred minutes
How do you measure a year in the life

(chorus)
How about Love
how about love
how about love
measure in love
seasons of love
seasons of love

Five hundrend twenty five thousand
six hundred minutes
Five hundrend twenty five thousand
journeys to plan
Five hundrend twenty five thousand
six hundred minutes
how do you measure the life of a woman
or a man

In truth that she learned
or in times that he cried
In the bridges she curned
or the way that he died

Its time now to sing out
though the story never ends
lets celebrate remember a year
in the life of friends

(chorus)
