Feeling his way through the devastated streets, the Crepuscular Surgeon (First Class) cursed his taut nerves; when carrying the only source of light for miles around, a jumpy disposition can make life most difficult, as he was rapidly discovering. The surgeon paused momentarily to tighten the tourniquet around a deep cut he received from the shatted bulb, but his movements were febrile, betraying his unease at his current vocation. Squinting into the sky, his only sight was the oppressive darkness of the pall which steeped the city in perpetual twilight, his only company the gelid blasts from the north.

Moth wings tremored in the crepuscular garden shadows. Beneath their eerie green expanse, a pair of rat eyes reflected a febrile red. The moth's last strength seeped into the gelid night; soon its velvet wings lay torn and deserted on the ground.

inconsequential aileron lemur
Most of the messages the pteradactyl received, this high in the air, were inconsequential to his purpose. But one set of movements put him on instant alert, adjusting his aileron, as it were, for a quick bank. The lemur far below and to his right heard him coming, but too late.

cultivated hero flail
The goblins advanced menacingly through the crudely-cultivated field rows. The brawny hero and his companions milled about indistinctly, as if unsure of their actions. Suddenly, the warrior raised his spiked flail to battle-readiness, accompanied by the faint but distinct sound of dice being thrown in some distant dimension.

The reality is in this head. Mine. I'm the projector at the planetarium, all the closed little universe visible in the circle of that stage is coming out of my mouth, eyes, and sometimes other orifices also.

Tragically gullible, Snow White accepted the glistening red apple from the old woman. The vindictive glint in the hag/queen's eye was unmistakeable. The poison from the first bite traveled swiftly through ventricle and atrium, causing the princess to swoon and fall.

Stammering, the student responded to the beckonings of a young dancer. He may have had a face resembling rodentia, but he could still appreciate the undulations under the seven veils. By morning, their abandoned postures suggested a paramecium paused in separation.

Chipping doggedly at the crystalline mass, the grey man sought his prize, eyes fixed in eerie concentration. The dimly visible figure beneath the faceted crust was of slight stature, perhaps even dwarfish, but even the diminutive could not hide from the grey man. After a number of days, the grey man eventually reached his terrified quarry, concealed within the ice; "You should know by now," he sneered, "none can hide from the ageless tax inspectors"

Lol, CJ. You wouldn't be the first to resort to such measures. A useful strategem, I calls it. There, a : would work even better than ; .
I suggest, however, that you could remove the requirement of a period after "sneered" by not capitalizing "None".

The silence of his own study was most conducive to our hero’s thoughts. In it, he found the conclusive answers to life, the universe, and everything. Yet, when he released his answers to the world, our hero felt the wind of his inspiration becalmed by the effusive compliments of his readers.

tacky sparked effluvium
The young woman strode confidently into her 10-year high school reunion wearing the most tacky clothing she had been able to find. Channeling her high school uber-geek powers, she pratfalled and bumbled about the reception area and sparked a wide buzz of humor and remembered disdain. Only a few that were 'in-the-know' saw through the visual effluvium and understood the pointed message of scorn from a woman who had just been named chief editor of the hottest teen-style magazine.

gastronomic mendacity fallacy
The new cafe on the corner of Ratty and Mean Streets was known to be gastronomic heaven. With coy mendacity, the dusty awnings shaded pancakes whose fluffiness would have floated them away without the syrup to hold them down; steaks so fresh the steers were still looking around for their lost haunches; green beans that snapped with the celerity of a ringmaster's whip; homemade ice cream that could float half of Manhattan away on a tide of bliss. It is a fallacy that food must have color coordination and an exotic secret recipe: Mamma's Eats was based on Mamma's love of feeding people.

Donaldson uses colons like you wouldn't believe. Not a criticism, just what I noticed of his writing style. So naturally, I pick up on them. My idea of the use of a colon is to join two conjunctions together when it wouldn't suffice to have two sentences. They also tend to carry on a thought or action/concept in a sentence.CovenantJr wrote:Useful adviceHowever, I'm wary of colons - their uses baffle me, ever since my school English teacher failed to satisfactorily explain. Anyway, are you going to make an entry?

A nugget of gold was found in the stream, near the old mill. The lucky individual had to extrapolate what the price of gold would be in a year (when he would return home). As it was approaching nightime, he had to return to the camp and hide his prize.

Mellow Fundamental Turbine
The mellow hum of the mill swept softly across the stream to the miller as he ate his lunch. There was a fundamental harmony in the sound, blending with the chuckle of water and the sweetness of the air. No turbine this, just rushing water and creaking wood, grinding the harvest to make bread for his people.
