I think the wizarding community must be able to detect wizard potential regardless and thus the letter of invitation to attend Hogwarts or another school of wizardry depending on location. Well yeah, that's what I meant.

I seem to recall in Sorceror's Stone Hagrid goes out of his way to assure Harry that the galleons in his vault is more than enough to pay for his tuition at Hogwarts. And I know the Weasleys struggle to afford school books and robes.

From what is described of the financial situation of Marvolo's family, I doubt they could have afforded tuition without assistance, and I have a gut feeling assistance would have been turned down.
I think if they did attend, it would be at Durmstrang, and they lived in Eastern Europe, correct? So, since we know nothing of Durmstrang, aside from Karakaroff and Viktor, it's really tough to say what the policies procedures there may be

I think Marvolo's family lived in the village just outside the Riddle's manor. So, it was somewhere in England I think.

But IIRC Draco did comment that his father considered sending him to Durmstrang, so if Marvolo had the tuition, I could see him sending his offspring there.

The Riddle Mansion is in Eastern Europe, Transylvania, or Romania, or something like that, I believe.

Well, I've hit a glitch (see the elohimfest 2007 thread) so I won't be able to make Elohimfest. So looks like no Guns/Jenn theory debate  .

However, Jenn is trying to get me there, and has asked me to represent her in our HP talks. I will be a poor representative in the Snape had feelings for Lilly debate though, as I'm on Guns side there.

I am sure you will represent just fine! Otherwise I wouldn't have chosen you silly! And rest assured, I will get you there and home.

Jenn, check out my decription of Beorn's bar mitzvah weekend at The Simcha! It goes for several posts.

I don't have my own camera, so will be relying on others to share pictures, and as you can see from those posts, I'm not the best at descriptive writing. But, I'll do my best for ya!

WAIT A MINUTE GUYS!!!

What if Snape loves TONKS. Think about it. In HBP he calls Tonks Nymphadora and he comments that he was interested in seeing her new patronus and then gets all pissy with her and says," I think you were better off with the old one, the new one looks weak." and he says this with unmistakeable malice in his voice. Tonks' reaction to this is shock and anger which means she didn't expect Snape to be so mean to her. The Snape doesn't say anything for a bit as Harry and he walk toward the school, maybe he's trying to get his emotions under control. Maybe he's jealous because the patronus change reveals to him that Tonks likes Lupin. Furthermore, what if they fell in love years ago, then Tonks dumped him when she found out he was a death eater and so he turned traitor to Voldy to win her love back but was unsuccessful.

Oh and Sin, I'm pretty sure that the Riddle mansion is in a town called Little Hangleton and is alluded to being in England. I think you may be mixing up V's hiding out in I think Albania. He WAS in, again I think Albania when Wormtail went to find him. While in Albania, Wormtail ran into Bertha Jorkins who spilled the beans about Barty Jr so Wormtail traveled back to England with Voldy in tow and showed up at Barty Crouch Sr's house, put him under the imperious spell, freed Barty Jr and then took up residence in the long abandoned Riddle mansion also in England, to await the results of the Triwizard trap that Barty Jr put in motion. I think the only mention of Romania is that Charlie works there. I'll double check this over the weekend.

Romania, yea, you're right, no need to double check that.

So, Little Hangleton and the Riddle mansion and the Graveyard are not the Eastern European location? I guess I was confused, I'll have to double check that at some point.

Anyone seen the pic of young Snape from the OotP movie?

www.harrymedia.com/img/details.php?image_id=22788

Leaky Cauldron has a link to the young Maruaders as well, but, I wasn't as impressed with them. And for the younger set, there's more pics linked from Equus, and one apparently has a bare butt shot of Dan Radcliffe

Oh, and Tonks is only just in her late 20s, it seems, far too young for Snape, IMHO.

Um, Sin, Tonks loves Lupin and Lupin is the same age as Snape.....also, are we ever actually told how old Tonks actually is?

Here's one for you guys, Cormac McLaggen. If he's a seventh year AND in Gryffindor, how come Harry and Neville have NEVER encountered him in the previous five years? It's explained why he didn't try out the last year but what about all the other years if tryouts are held every year? Second year makes a good example, third year too!

Yea, but, that's a recent development, I got the impression, you were saying a ways back Snape and Tonks had something or Snape was infatuated. in OotP, I got the impression, she's not much older than the kids, and younger than the parents. Auror training takes 3 years, and she started that 6 or 7 years ago, or made a reference to having a professor we know, or something. I definitely got the impression, she is not 30 yet, from OotP.

Ok, I see your point. It's a bit confusing though about how old she really is. She was born before Harry's parents were killed for sure. I remember someone saying that Tonks was not old enough to be a member during a discussion of the old Order of the Phoenix. I kinda got the impression that meant she was maybe a teenager at the time of the old order. I don't know.

I'd say that since Wood was captain and keeper during that time, McLaggen didn't really have a hope.

Good point VS. I still find it hard to believe that they never once encountered McLaggen in five years of communal residence. Never passed him once in the Gryffindor common room?

They may have, but just never bothered to notice or interact with him. A lot of schools, even smaller ones, can be like that.
