It does have endless entertainment value though, in that the person who recommended it to me doesn't enunciate very clearly, so it always sounds like he's saying "day o' sex"

I had noticed a lot of people in computer game stores announcing that they were due sex, but I thought they were just stating the obvious rather than asking for a game.

:LOLS:

Being due sex and playing computer games seems to go hand in hand. ;)

Played Natural Selection (Half-Life mod) with a friend last night. We were deep in a tunnel, both of us on the Marine team. One of the warrior aliens (called "Fade") leapt out of nowhere, and I was sure my friend was screwed. Luckily, I had my heavy machine gun, and I saved his arse.

Lots of other great moments were had. Ah, the dynamism of online gaming!

Started playing Chrono Trigger again. This time I will NOT abandon it. Must, must, must finish it and will. It was my New Year's resolution, after all.

I can't play any FPS's until I get my mouse sorted out. I have a new desk, but it's too shiny for an optical mouse to work on. At the moment I'm using a bit of cardboard, but that slides around too much to be any good for games that require quick reflexes.

We've recently started playing Unreal Tournament over the network here again. Been a while.

I read some fantastic reviews of Riddick, but I think the game got overshadowed by the mediocrity of the movie. I think i'll pick up a copy for my new Xbox.

I didn't think a surface could be too shiny for an optical mouse. I use a polished stainless steel mouse mat. Is it that the desk veneer isn't quite smooth?

I played a bit more KOTOR at the weekend, trying to finish every light side quest. I've not figured out how to avoid killing Dustil yet.

Spoiler
I'm not sure if you have to use certain "persuade" options, and I can't remember exactly what you say, but you have to keep trying to convince him that you're on his side and the Sith are evil (I think you have to have Carth in your party)... and eventually he'll say "Okay, prove they're evil" or something. Then you go into Master Uthar's room, and there's a datapad proving that the Sith murdered Dustil's friend. And you take it back to him, and he'll be all shocked and leave.

optical uses a laser measurement system that determines the point between the positions of one point of the mouse and the next one in any given movement, so a "grid" pattern is necessary for optimal accuracy or even functionality. basically. ;)

Oh, and about the mouse... well, I don't know if Esmer just supported or contradicted my theory that it's too shiny, but I think it reflects the laser back into the mouse... or something. I don't think it has anything to do with it being smooth, because it works fine on my leg (but my leg isn't wide enough).

I also tried it on a mousemat I have, which is a polished (and flattened) circuit board. And that seemed to be too shiny for it too. Perhaps you just have a better mouse than me.

An optical mouse uses a tiny camera to take approximately 1,500 pictures every second. The pictures are taken by bouncing light from a small, red light-emitting diode (LED) off the surface under the mouse, and onto a complimentary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) sensor. The CMOS sensor sends each image to a digital signal processor (DSP) for analysis. The DSP, operating at 18 MIPS (million instructions per second), is able to detect the changing patterns in the images between movements. Based on these patterns, the DSP determines how far the mouse has moved and sends the corresponding coordinates to the computer. The computer moves the cursor on the screen based on the coordinates received. Since this happens hundreds of times each second, the cursor appears to move very smoothly.
so, basically, a shiny smooth surface has no "points of reference" for the sensor to utilize, but your pants are a woven fabric that has a "grid" in the weave pattern that allows it to make distinctions between movements... ;)
