Rattle That Lock
Released: September 2015

David Gilmour's fourth solo album could almost be described as
eclectic. It's a mixture of soft rock with a bit of ambient, and - wait for it - jazz! There's even a song in there that sounds a bit like a waltz. Overall, I like this album.

Initially I thought "Here we go, another intro song - yawn" and I was partially right. It starts with bird noises! But then it moves fairly quickly into very pleasant guitar. This is one of his better intro songs. It kind of feels like it's going somewhere but unfortunately it just fades out.

This is a very pop-y track. I'm not sure I'd use it as the title track. There's nothing particularly wrong with it I guess, it's just a bit... meh. Fades out...
Faces of Stone

I love the piano intro, and then the 3/4 waltz-like quality of this song. Dave's voice is really pleasant at the beginning. Lyrics sound like Gilmour! Those aside, I really like the feel of this song. His guitar solos from
On an Island to this record are just right. The bridge is a bit iffy, but it gets back to the main theme pretty quickly. The end solo is great. Unfortunately again, it fades out (I know, you're gonna get annoyed with me for continuing to say it, but it's really starting to shit me). I like this song though.
A Boat Lies Waiting

This one has a slow start. A very slow start. A slow, ambient, slow start... Some nice piano comes in eventually, and it's a pleasant little meandering song. And then we get some beautifully harmonised singing, and transforms from a standard ambient track to a moving tribute of a song. I'm disappointed that it seems to have just begun, and suddenly it fades out into nothing. So much more could have been made of this song.
Dancing Right in Front of Me
StevieG rating: 7/10
Here we have another pleasant track, with a bit of jazz influence. There's a particular section of the song that definitely jazzy. Some classy guitar work again, and then some jazz-infused piano baby! It smoothly smokes along with some nice guitar, nice backing vocals, nice piano. Extended guitar to the end, which of course fades out, but you know, sometimes that's ok. Or not...
In Any Tongue

The music is great. The music video is absolutely devastating. It rivals many of Roger Waters' evocative work. The guitar is awesome. After nearly 7 minutes it effing fades out which is the only disappointment.
Beauty

He's improved his instrumentals. After 2 minutes of noodling, the nice rhythmic guitar comes in with some lazy drums, followed by some nice bass and piano. Just when it gets going... yeah, it fades out.

David "Jazz" Gilmour.

I don't mind a bit of jazz. This is very very jazz! I must admit I need to adjust for a while, but once that happens, it's a nice little ditty. Some snazzy sax. And...
a fade out.
Today
StevieG rating: 5/10
Starts as a hymn. And then moves into a weird something that is nothing like a hymn. I can't hear any return to the intro in the track. It's ok, but I don't enjoy it much to be honest. The guitar is good, as should be expected.

Nice bit of keyboard work too. And guess what? It fades out...
And then...
StevieG rating: 6/10
For an instrumental it's nice. The guitar is melodic, it has a laid back gentle, content feel to it. There's some nice acoustic guitar near the end, and I'm keen to hear more, but Dave insists on fading it out which is more than frustrating.
