Memory of the most recent vatic pronouncement hung in the air like a yellow fog. Pilgrims would be gathering in huge numbers on the arid plain; each household was to encumber itself with as many visitors as it had food for. In a few weeks they would be gone again, and the tribespeople would be left to face the icy wastes with no cure for Kismet and hunger.

Yawning my disapproval of the morning, I scanned the newspaper while hoping that my viral malaise would not burgeon into full-blown flu. I briefly considered buying a lottery ticket, thereby increasing my chances of joining the modern Fortunata from nothing to not-bloody-likely. A half-hearted, gooey sneeze was all the heraldic vison I needed, and I promptly closed the curtains and went back to bed.

Fluffy, gnashing his three jaws of teeth, seemed guardian enough for the irreplacable gem. Thief after would-be thief met his end dashing across the pitted floor during moments when Fluffy appeared to be sleeping. This slim figure leaping straight for one of the sensitive noses appeared to be even rasher than his predecessors -- until the delicate odor of unicorn flesh sang to the black slavering heads of heaven and hunger.

The horrendous clang of the triangle alerted the ranch hands that chow was about to commence. This caused a spasmodic shuddering in Ustes, an obsessive overeater. Quite often ol' Ustes had to be loaded in the wain and carted away from the mess hall.

Ambling through the home pasture, Bossy's hoof struck an abscissa which had been left behind by the local time-gate builders. Such was her lassitude from her midday sun -- suddenly missing though it was -- that she merely gazed down her nose while white shreds of algae whizzed marveling about her horns. They had not thought to purloin from another world this slow-moving beast of flesh, but now she was here, their curiosity could not be contained.

Snorkeling and taking in the ocean view was definitely better than watching my father trying to placate my mother--I knew she would never be satisfied with another day at the beach. Meanwhile, my sisters continued to prance up and down the sandy beach.

Analyzing a drachm of hyacinth colored fluid found among a passenger’s belongings, one scientist began to dream forbidden dreams. His microscope showed a phantasmagoric combination of hallucinogens, in so many discrete forms that once they entered a human body, no one could possibly identify and counter them all in time. Here might be his opportunity for unilateral havoc among his employers, or – he paused and thought – it might be a metaphor for the hell his life would become if he were caught.
