Thanks, everyone! Sea, the Canon was $350 (CAN) before taxes. I'd say that was a fair market price, when considering the excellent build quality I was getting, in addition to advanced features like full manual mode and image stabilization. I give the A710 a big thumbs up. Based on my experience thus far, it has lived up to the good reviews it's gotten. Would you believe I've taken the majority of my shots single-handed? The A710 may be compact, but it's an ergonomically well-designed device. It feels solid gripping the camera in my right hand, plus the image stabilizer really works in reducing/eliminating blurred pictures due to hand shake. The only not-so-great thing about the A710 is its tiny optical viewfinder, which I've simply ignored. In theory, it's good for bright outdoors when sunlight might make it hard to see the LCD display, or when you want to conserve battery power since the LCD sucks up a lot of juice. But in reality I don't take pictures in bright sunlight if I can avoid it because that's the crappiest, harshest kind of light for photography. The tiny viewfinder is also just plain uncool next to the gorgeous 2.5" LCD screen.

So, overall, I'd happily recommend the A710 to anyone. Funny that it should be labelled as a "budget" model, since for me $350 wasn't exactly cheap! At any rate, the A710 is a solid piece of equipment that doesn't feel like a cheap budget thing. I would imagine you'd have to pay much more - getting into SLR territory - to get something that has appreciably higher quality optics than the A710. I'm just plenty pleased with this compact wonder. 8)

Wow! Can't believe I've missed all these great pictures!

Here are some of my random shots:
(1) Overlooking Cheddar gorge.
(2) A face in the rock! (do you see it?)
(3) Cornish country road.
(4) Yes, I like sunsets.
(5) Drool Rockworm's lair! (Wookey Hole caves, Somerset)
(6) Gross mutant crab claws. This is why I don't eat seafood anymore!

:?: Eh? (Sorry, I am being a bit dense today)

Odd thing was, I didn't see the "face" until I got home and looked at the picture.

Just got a new camera phone that's about as good as a cheap digital cam. Watch this space!

Gorgeous b&w photos, Wyl!

Reave, those are pretty decent pics from a phone cam!

Kins, I especially like the shots of Wetheril Mesa and the one of Sleeping Ute Mountain! The top photobucket page wasn't loading, so I'll check it out later.

A scattershot bunch of mine:

WOW! I always absolutely *love* your photos MM. There's something about the way you view the world (through your lense) that clicks with me...and your pictures are just brilliant.

the first one is probably my favourite, although the colours and depth of the third is brilliant, and the 5th is just has the perfect angle, the perfect frame, and I love the balance...the trees reflected in the windows. And then when I saw the 6th as a small preview I thought "oh yeah..." but when I looked at the larger shot...I was blown away (as in the small preview I was thinking it looked like some...well...I dunno...some really weird little building or something...). What is that anyway? A war memorial.

Anyway...I'm ranting. Love them! Love them (and gotta get myself one of those cameras!!!!!!!! Wow they take brilliant crisp photos...or maybe that's just your talent! ;) )

Holy crap...just realized I'm over 5000 posts. How did that happen?

Thanks, Sea and Av!

(Well, you see, I don't have grand vistas of nature to work with, so I'm forced to be more...creative...in how I take my shots. )

Kinslaughterer, you have a great eye for photos. Looks like you've been to many gorgeous places!

Matrixman, I've been trying to think why I like the second one the most and what it reminds me of. I think the trees look kind of like bleached coral or something? Can't put it in to words very well... I'll just enjoy them instead!

I mentioned to MM the other day that I'd done some work in World Heritage Rainforest (in my good olde Indiana Jones days)...so here's three pics for you MM.

1) Our camp, on a day when the river rose about half a meter overnight and then continued to rise...and we had to move everything.

2) The view from our camp (our second location)...imagine waking up to that each morning!!! :)

3) Me helping take levels in Jiyer Cave.
