Das Boot was a German film, not American. IIRC, when I first was the movie in a theater there were subtitles. Wasn't the movie nominated and won an Oscar for best foreign film?

Noticed that "Enemy at the Gate" didn't make the list...pity, cos it was a beauty!

You're right about those two being great, although (at least by my definition of war movies) I don't think Enemy qualifies (it is a great movie, though!) Blackhawk Down definitely belongs on the list.

Platoon and Apocalypse now are two of the most overrated war movies of all time IMHO. (Just left the overrated movies thread... lol) I would definately have put the Lean movies a lot higher. There is also a huge focus on 20th century wars. What about Braveheart? Spartacus? (historical epic is a different genre I guess)

Someone chucked in Gettysburg, well done nice to know war is not confined to the 20th century, so what about Waterloo, Zulu, the first Hornblower movie with Gregory Peck, War and Peace, Doctor chivago? Then there's Star Wars, the various wars with the Klingons and Borg, War of the worlds...... and of course in the 20th century, Battle of Britain.

Merry Christmas. Mr. Lawrence with David Bowie and Tom Conti about Japanese prison camps in WW2. Loved that movie. Very graphic.

- Just watched Platoon again last week...still an amazing film, love it.
- Schindler isn't a war film.
- Never seen Das Boot or Paths of Glory, though they're on my 'next2watch' list.
- I like Braveheart far more than SPR though SPR is a very good film with truly iconic scenes

on the rest
- Would move Glory up a little
- I never understood TRL, just pointless nonsense, though acted, edited and scored really well
- Would move Iwa Jima up
- Three Kings? wth? good film, not even remotely close to this calibur...
