Well that's Glastonbury over for another year, and it was definitely one of the best yet! A brief (edit: ;) )run-down if anyone is interested....

Got there on Wednesday even though music doesn't start til Friday. Went with my best mate from home, A, as always. met up with another couple of friends, C & R, got tents up, and had the traditional drinks and smokes at campsite to celebrate. Then off to the Brothers Bar for some festival strength (7%) pearcider (again, tradition). On second pint, A gets a phonecall and finds out that he's got the job he'd applied for the previous week. So further celebrations were the order of the day, and it all got rather messy  !

Thursday started off fine, without much hangover considering, but by evening it had started to rain, so wellies and army poncho time which was ok but it's a bummer when everything gets slippy (we're on a farm don't forget) and you can't just sit down wherever you want. So it was an early night.

Friday still raining but we went to Other Stage to check out Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong that C & R had recommended. They were ok, the sun coming out (briefly) got the loudest cheer. On way out we chanced upon an experimental jazz thing at The Glade, with Charles Hazlewood and a guy out of Portishead and another from Goldfrapp (too sober for it!) Rain stopped just in time for Alabama 3 at the Jazzworld stage. They were fantastic, played woke up this morning, speed of sound of loneliness, and the plan, and loads of other stuff I didn't know, but we jumped up and down alot and sang along to what we could (one of quotes of festival "LSD never did any harm to a nine year old"). was a bit disappointed they didn't play some of my fave tracks though. After that we went to the Dance Village to explore and found Zion Train playing at Dance West stage. they were great - reggae/dance beats. by this stage we were exhausted so we decided to chill out at the acoustic stage were we caught Luka Bloom (Christy Moore's brother) playing. He was good fun, and we even had a singalong to 'City of Chicago' (didn't know it was his song). Hung around there for the Blockheads, who'd been great at Wychwood a few weeks ago, but loads of people showed up and it got a bit too hectic, so we wondered over to the Pyramid Stage (the main stage) and caught the end of the Fratellis and the start of Kings of Leon (both mediocre). It was about 11pm and I decided that Alabama 3 might play a different set second time so we went to Leftfield Stage to see them again. Leftfield was having a MOJO evening (Miscarriages of Justice organisation) and we had a little talk from Paddy Hill (of Birmingham Six) and a few others before A3 came on. This time  they did play U don't dance to tekkno, and Mao tse tung said, 2 of my faves.

Saturday started off perfect as the mud had dried up, cos my legs were killing me from 2 days of wellies ('squishies'? in US-speak?) We started off at Avalon for the Wurzels which was unbelievably good. I had sore sides from laughing and no voice from singing along and was very hot and sweaty from jumping up and down in a very very crowded tent! They played all their classics - Blackbird, Drink up ye cider, brand new combine harvester, i am a cider drinker, etc etc. Afternoon was spent recovering, then to Pyramid for Manu Chao, who was the act I'd been most looking forward to. He was really good, but we were too far back to really get into the atmosphere. We caught the first half of Buddy Guy at Jazzworld next, but tho i can see he's good, blues guitar isn't really my thing, so we wandered up to the Park stage where we saw Battles (very strange, but strangely good) followed by CSS who were fun as expected.

Sunday was probably the best single day I've ever had at Glastonbury, though it started off with an annoyance. We'd gone to see Yeasayer at John Peel Stage at 1pm, but they'd swapped slots, so we had to sit through The Whip first (ok). Yeasayer were good, but not as good as I'd hoped, and because they were on later than expected, I missed Brian Jonestown Massacre (sorry Sarge). After that we watched Jack Penate at the Other Stage (eminently forgettable) before back to the john peel stage for Stars. They were magnificent -melodious in the right bits, loud in the right bits, and one of the highlights of the festival. Walking back past the Pyramid we caught the last 15 minutes of Neil Diamond - we were just in time to sing along with about 100000 others to I'm a believer, coming to america, and sweet caroline, which was great. we hung around for goldfrapp but though nice we were in the mood for something different, so we went to Jazzworld to see Eddy Grant. He was fabulous too - lots of great reggae that I didn't recognise, lots of fun and chat, and then he finished with I don't wanna dance, electric avenue, and give me hope joanna. Next up was leftfield, for carl somebody (ex libertines and dirty pretty things) and then back to dance east for UNKLE, another band that I'd really looked forward to. And they lived up to every expectation!

all in all a great weekend that we'll be talking about for years to come. I'll post a few youtube links as I find them.....

I watched glastonbury '08 on tv and it looked amazing. I really wanna go next year but I don't think any of my mates will have the determination to save up and go with me. Now I've been to a few rock festivals with some friends, but my question is . . . "Are festivals still as good if you go alone?"

"Are festivals still as good if you go alone?"
That all depends on you! If you're a friendly type, then definitely give it a go. It you're verging on shyness, might be better going to one of the smaller more intimate ones, if you're on your own. I know some people who go off to festivals on their own, just for the music, and enjoy it. I don't know if I could. Thing about Glastonbury is though, you're best with just 2 or 3 people. It's so bloody big and it takes so long to get from a to b to c, that if you have any more than that you get nowhere, with someone buying drink, food, going for pee, or just getting caught up in something going on, all the time.

BBC have some videos up...

I can't believe That Petrol Emotion are still around. Regardless, I want to come on Sunday and see several of the bands you have highlighted. Particularly Grinderman. Though I wouldn't mind seeing Christy Moore.

That Petrol emotion are NOT still around! They've just re-formed for this I think. They played as Undertones last year, though they did do a few gigs elsewhere too, so maybe TPE will as well.

Well the last festival of the year is over, and along with Glastonbury this year, possibly the best I have ever been to!

So so many good bands watched - Tinariwen, That Petrol Emotion, My Bloody Valentine, The Breeders, Digitalism, Underworld, Crystal Castles, Elbow, Wilco, were all fantastic.

The Sex Pistols were an absolute joke, but I kind of expected that. George Clinton was a bit disappointing. I managed to miss some of the big performances of the weekend like Christy Moore and Sinead O'Connor. But I don't think I have ever packed so much sheer fun into a weekend in my life!

(all links are phone cameras so quality is dodgy....)

That Petrol Emotion - Big Decision

Underworld - Born Slippy (with big wobbly balls 8O  )

My Bloody Valentine - (except from the 15 minute 'Holocaust' of noise that they end on)
www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBbQBV7btR4
(as mentioned before, the loudest noise I've ever heard, now 3 times ! )

 Here we go the dreams have started! Two Glastonbury dreams so far this week, which isn't surprising considering how much I'm obsessing about it!

A nice gentle start to the festival season next week, though, with our local one at Wychwood.

Highlights include The Wonderstuff, The Men They Couldn't Hang, Supergrass, Oysterband, Little Boots, The Beat, Kissmet, Dub Colossus, Cara Dillon. No doubt there'll be a few unexpected gems as well.

Oh, and something I'm looking forward to almost as much as the music - The Goan Fish Co. Fish curry for lunch dinner and supper for three days mmmmmm! (Fresh caught fish every morning)
