Aren't stories by their very nature, not 'real'? No representation on a page can be 'real' - eg: a book can describe a flower, but you can't smell it, or touch it, etc.

TC's world may be realistic (which is what Donaldson intended, imo), but it can never be 'real'. Unfortunately.

Yes Socrates himself is particularly missed...
A lovely little thinker, but a bugger when he's pissed!

LOL .. well i think danlo has found the support that his world is OUR world .. lol ..

and just because its a world of fantasy doesnt mean it cant take a position between both real world and fantasy worlds .. which to me is what TCTC centres on ..

TC is in our world .. and there are lepers in our world .. yet they do not exist in the Land <fantasy world> .. and there are bigots in our world .. infact we're famous for them!!! LOL .. and small minded weirdo's too for that matter .. and most definately there are folks so obsessed with religion that they would get all zealous and do self-injurious acts .. and even sacrifice themselves and others in the name of that obsession ..

our world is full of the types of folks SRD describes .. to me TC's world is VERY REAL ..

it is not a fantasy concoction till TC arrives in the Land imho .. and lets not forget .. SRD described the US!!! LOL .. you cant get more weird and surreal than that ;) ;) ;) jk lol ..

but you got to admit .. the birth place of the klu klux klan .. the birth place of televised religion .. the rabbid NRA ;) ;) .. extreme right wing conspiracy theory miliants .. you guys got it all ..

plenty food for TCTC fodder without any recourse to fictional themes .. let alone fantasy ..

<prepares for flame warfare> you know i love you guys and i have never held your americaness against you ;)

<dangles rod waiting for the bites to begin> ;) ;)

Hey, Land of the Free, Home of the Brave! We have it all because we allow it all!

How's that for a nibble? :)

As much as I criticize the US, I must admit I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. Oddly enough, those who immigrate here nearly always stay. :?

My ancestors were farmers from Germany who came to the US so they could own property.

Sky your ancestors, if you are an English descended Australian, went to Australia because they were probably criminals but I won't hold it against you :D

Then again we are all criminals, however only some of us get caught. ;)

LOL .. nope i came to Australia in the 70's as a bambino .. and they allowed free settlers then ;) ;)

LOL .. but who knows i may have my share of skeletons hiding in my ancestoral closet too ;)

I am joking in my US gibes .. there are weirdo's everywhere .. lol .. my guess is the US does NOT have a monopoly on them ;) ... no matter how convincing ;) LOL

I really believe SRD didnt have to tap into fantasy notions to come up with TC's world .. and the kinds of characters he encounters there ..

especially the religious nutters ..

its nothing if not open season .. in this our real world .. when it comes to resource discovery ..

Hindi and English are the official languages of India. Hindi is spoken mostly in the northern States of India. The southern states tend to have their own languages. The language that is spoken commonly by people from the north and south is English. In addition, the courts are held in English and the technical schools (engineering and medicine for example) are taught in English. Mandarin Chinese is the most commonly used primary language, but more peoplein the world can speak English.

I think that the world of TC definitely is meant to be our world. There are too many similarities and nothing to distinguish it from our world at all.

I believe that if it had been SRD's intention that it should be a different world then he would have made that clear, somehow.
