Well, good point about Anakin: I can believe that he was exerting Force against Palpatine with his last remaining strength to ensure the old guy doesn't come back up. It makes sense. I can accept that better than the other explanation. To get cheeky: The ability of a chasm to produce arcing energy is insignificant next to the power of the Force. :P

Well its very likely that that particular conduit was a direct feed to the station's reactor core and the closer old Palp got to the bottom the less likely he was gonna survive in any case. No matter how you slice it, dude got what was coming to him. :-)

Aargh...okay, I'll concede that even a Jedi Master may have trouble keeping his wits about himself near the ferocious core of a humongous reactor.

Thanks, Cail! It's always fun when the Star Wars gang is interviewed - especially Carrie Fisher. :)

This answer from Lucas was interesting:
You know, the studio executive, Alan Ladd, did one of the best things that any studio executive could do. I don't know whether it happens anymore but it did happen then; he said - when I gave him the script, which was incomprehensible - he said, I don't really get this at all, but I believe in you. And I'm making this movie 'cos I want to see what you're going to do, not because this is a great movie or this is something I understand. He just said, I know you're going to do something wonderful and I want to be a part of it. I don't know how many people do that anymore.
To quote a character from another movie: "In the 70's you could be an idealist. Today, it's too expensive!"

Studio executives are mysterious to me, but Alan Ladd Jr. seems like a good guy, at least according to what Lucas says here and what was said in the Empire of Dreams documentary (on the bonus DVD of the SW Special Editions). From what I understand, the politics over the unprecedented success of Star Wars forced Ladd out of his job at 20th Century Fox. Too bad.
