To me, discussion about where one book starts and the other one begins is a bit bizarre. I mean: ok...so each book of the first and second chronicles are a little more "neat". But, does it really matter? We're talking about a shorter time frame in the last chronicles. ...<shrug>... It doesn't bug me.

I agree that it is much less cut and dried than with the previous chronicles, but the events of chapter 3 certainly demarcate the point at which the story moves forward again. Chapters 1 and 2 are scene setters, are they not?

As a deffender of both Runes and the First wo Chapters of FR...I haven't voiced my dissmay at the book separation thing.

I loved that about the First Chrons...Three stories set together...I like that...that way you can just pick up TPTP for example and read it, without reading the other two.

The 2nd chrons was just one big story (origionally planned for 4 books) broken into three books.
It seems that the last Chrons will be the same way...although I could be completely off base...I'm sure SOMEtime we're going to see TC as the POV charactor again.

I thought that Chapter 2 was FINALLY the SRD I know and love from the previous two Chronicles.

ROTE seemed a bit to pat, or trite, and IMO almost to the level of fan fiction. I'm not knocking fan fiction, but I expect better from "the" original author!!

My hopes are up, my evenings are blocked, seat backs and tray tables are in the upright and locked position, and my order is IN!!!!

An ARC of Fatal Revenant appeared on my doorstep today from Putnam - so I guess I'll know sometime tomorrow if my initial impression is off or not.

I wasn't terribly impressed with Runes. It was like finding stagnant water in a desert. It's certainly refreshing but it's not as good as you might have anticipated. I agree largely with the person who said that the lack of a truly memorable character in Runes was a detriment. I hadn't thought of that but I did have this vague sense of not being entirely fulfilled after reading it. I held out hope as I wasn't terribly impressed with LFB but I was floored by TIW and TPTP.

The first couple of chapters of Revenant are definitely scene setters but, like an enormous boulder dislodged from a high mountain peak, the story quickly picks up a relentless momentum. I'm on about page 200 and my vague sense of disappointment is now a long distant memory. All I can say to those who will be reading this soon is "Prepare Thyself!". Donaldson is back and he's back with a vengeance!

Ah, don't worry, dlb. I don't have a copy of the ARC either. And that's inspite of me sucking up, begging, as well as trying to guilt people into giving one to me. Alas, I'll be waiting for 10/9 like everyone else.

(Not that I'd be able to read it anytime soon anyway, heh.)

So Romeo, since you're in a position to know: Has SRD started writing "Whatever We're Calling Book 9 This Week" yet?

I sure hope he finds a better title. Both of the titles they've come up with so far are "commercially" unacceptable. I can't imagine someone seeing a book with the title of "Against All Things Ending", and thinking, "Oooh, what a snappy title! I *must* buy this book."

Everyone I've mentioned this to (and without adding my own bias) has hated it. They've laughed, made fun of, and scorned it. These folks aren't SRD fans - they're not even "fantasy fans". But they literary people. Teachers, other published authors.

It's a disastrous title. Weighty, unwieldy, and clunky on the tongue. But SRD is so darn stubborn, I'm sure that he'll refuse to see the problem with it.

(Can anyone tell I'm a bit irritated with him right now?)

It wasn't his idea to change the title in the first place.

I know - but he did say that it was a title he was happy with. Still, the other title wasn't much better.

I am in a position to know about any progress on "That Which Must Not Be Named." But I'm NOT in a position to say anything, whether there's something to know or not.

Well - I won't give anything away, but the chapters beyond the first two significantly improved. I should know by now to trust the guy.
