The point about seeing all varieties of movies is a good one. I guess the real argument might be over this question: is seeing only the top moneymakers of all time the same thing as seeing many varieties of movies?

Sadly, there are people who do think like that. I had an ex's sister tell me (one night when we saw Hidden at the cinema) that she was a 'movie snob' because she only saw films which had famous actors in them, or which were made by Hollywood. Despite imagining I heard a thousand Frenchmen break their breadsticks in fury, I joked that I was a 'movie snob' for exactly the opposite reason.

I agree. I expressed a similar sentiment in the "best low budget flicks" thread: "It makes me mad when great, small films get lost in the shuffle because the studios fail to sufficiently promote them - or because the public just has no taste for them."

Good point. A few like Star Wars have proven their staying power, but many top earners occupy the limelight for just a brief time and then vanish, never to be heard from again.

For me, the films of Stanley Kubrick immediately come to mind as examples of works of lasting impact, well beyond their initially unimpressive box office performance. His films continue to be talked about and argued over, years after their release. Just for the fun of it, I looked up the domestic US box office take of five well-known Kubrick films - also via Box Office Mojo for consistency:

2001: A Space Odyssey: $55.9 million (lifetime gross)
Eyes Wide Shut: $55.6 million
Full Metal Jacket: $46.3 million
The Shining: $44 million
A Clockwork Orange: $26.5 million

Now compare those grosses to that of Rush Hour 2. Yes, Rush Hour 2. This one single movie (a sequel, no less) took in $226 million. Which matches almost exactly the combined gross of the five Kubrick films listed. But will Rush Hour 2 be remembered in thirty or forty years' time? Well, let's meet back here in 2048 and see.

No, I won't turn this into a Kubrick thread. Montressor, I'm sure, could make the same case for Akira Kurosawa's films. And then I could talk about Ingmar Bergman's. Or Woody Allen's. Yet they constitute only a fraction of, as Montressor put it, that whole world of excellent cinema beyond the blockbusters.

Oh, and Martin Scorsese - arguably the most revered American filmmaker alive - has a grand total of 2 films among the Top 386 as listed in Box Office Mojo. Hooray, I guess. At least The Departed made more money than Hulk. Go, Marty, go!

Another American movie icon, Clint Eastwood, has a total of 3 films on the list. The highest at #356. Yay.

I think I've seen 69 of the first 100, and about 41 or 42 of the second 100. So I'm probably not in lemming territory, except for certain franchises (Indiana Jones! Star Wars! )

I think I've seen 155 of those 200.

I must not be a lemming. I counted 42 out of the top 200 seen.

I'm about the same as Damelon. 20 or so from the first list, about the same or less from the second. I don't follow reviews or box office popularity, but I do tend to stalk actors or actresses that I like, and generally enjoy movies they are in, even if they aren't technically very good movies.

It works for me, but don't ever let me give you any recommendations.
