Well, yes. I'd go with the former...and even the latter! As far as I'm concerned, there's no simple answer (after all, humans aren't simple and straight forward, so why should Roger be). Part of his disposition could be to do with his own experience as a child: Joan got involved with those "dudes" (sorry, can't remember the name of the cult. All I keep thinking is "the others" which is, of course, from LOST! ). Roger (if I remember correctly) ended up in boarding school (I think it says that in Runes?). Not exactly the best way to grow up. So you can add to the reason for Roger's hatred of Linden: here Linden is loving Jeremiah, going to the ends of the earth for him...and did Roger's mother (Joan) do that? No. He was essentially abandoned. Perhaps part of his animosity towards Linden is because she reminds him of what he didn't have as a child.

Do you mean it seems a "weak" reason for his behavior? I don't think so. The reasons aren't in-your-face but they're there, in little snippets. You've just got to add them all up. I think Roger's reaction to Linden is a very human one. Not weak, just *very* human: humans sometimes don't necessarily make sense, and they aren't necessarily very clear about why they behave the way they do. Throw in with that a bit of Foul whispering in your ear and...well...

Oh, he hates her and rightly so.
Roger did apply for a THOOLAH membership.
But it's currently under review.
At first we were like you and said "No, this guy is just crazy".
Then it was argued (by Longwrath) that he did make a great attempt to incinerate her several times.
That was tough to ignore.
Usually something that good is honored by a Gold Membership.
I'll think he'll be allowed a probationary membership later this month.
If he tries destroying the world beyond just to kill Linden....he's out!

Okay, then...why is Roger THIS hateful, SRD doesn't seem to think it merrits explination...I don't think it's justified enough to ignore a deeper show of his views...

I agree. The only explanation is how he was raised.

well, I kinda disagree. imo it's implied rather than said (you're not spoonfed when it comes to Roger). I think there's a journey there. I suppose it's got to do with how many personal stories you can tell (in detail anyway).

Maybe we'll get more in the last two books. I dunno. But I don't feel like I necessarily need it.
