I've only ever tried the computer version of Risk, way back in the 90's. It may have predated the one Malik mentioned. It must have, since I remember the graphics as being fairly simplistic. Anyway, I was totally new to the game, so two pals were teaching me the rules as they were playing. I eventually joined in for one match. I ended up doing well - I called it beginner's luck. But one of the friends lost badly, and got steamed about it because he felt the other friend and I had "ganged up" on him. I've never touched Risk since.

Risk is like that. Once a player is perceived as weakened, the others will almost invariably band together and take that player down. Unlike Diplomacy, there is no real mechanism for positive alliances.

Both games usually feature betrayal as the main perception on the part of those who do not win.

Yes, I see what you're saying. I'm just not the kind of gamer who likes to get caught up in interpersonal politics and crap like that. I like games that I can just pick up and play for fun. At the end of the day, it's just a f***king game, if you'll pardon my language.

(Maybe that's also a reason why I steer clear of MMORPG's like WoW, and the Gravin Threndor games here at KW.)

I just played Parcheesi the other night. I barely won after a fierce struggle. It was fun.

Card game. But if we can include card games, here is my favorite game of all time.

oh wow board games how have I missed this thread???

Me and childhood friend used to spend weeks playing single games of monopoly. We'd ditch most of the rules, print (well, 'draw' in those days!) our own money, allow debt, and used Lego to build skyscrapers of hotels. He's be blue and yellow Lego, i was red and white. Quite often the end of game was when we ran out of lego (and we had LOTS of lego!)

Risk was good, enjoyed Diplomacy too.

For quicker games, I used to love Downfall and Can't Stop.

A few years ago my big sis introduced me to Sequence (after she came back from Texas), and  a couple of Christmases ago she got some US friends to bring me over one (can't get it in Europe, it seems!)

Great game, but you needed to get the magic carpet to move quickly.

Risk is also a favourite, but Monopoly annoys me if the wife doesn't want to trade properties.
