I'm tempted, too
Maybe a group read / dissection is in order?
Hmmm... maybe...

Uh, we've already dissected Book 1, in case y'all haven't noticed.

The forum is called "Ancillary Documentation."

Heh..I'll have to look at that...I've never seen that thread, how long ago did you guys do it?
That said...if you can get enough people, I'd like to be part of a Gap dissection [pretty sure we could get Z into it....isn't it his favorite series by his favorite author? Think I saw him say that]

We dissected TRS right before FR came out. That kind of ended the Gap dissection right there. I enjoyed it, and put a lot of work into it. I'm not sure if I'd be up for another any time soon, though. The books get longer, and my time is shorter.

Yeah, but the chapters are always manageable.
I'd be interested, I mean, we need to do it at some point. Dunno if we could get FK in before the next TC book though. And once that's out, we'd have less interest.
Here's the link to the dissection forum in case you need it Vraith:

As a first time reader I dropped in here. I read the first chapter and half of the second last night, and must admit that if it wasn't for this forum and encouragement from certain people, it is not a book that I would have bought had I read the first chapter in a book shop. Admittedly one and a half chapters is not enough to judge a book on. I will persevere with the book I have, the first two books in one, and comment again.

IO,
If you're starting with The Real Story my vote is to read a plot summary (and the Donaldson breakdon of TRS in the print I have) and move on. That may stir the Gap fan pot...but I went a couple years after reading TRS before going on to the next book because I hated it sooooo much.
It would have been an enormous mistake to never read the rest of them.

Hi Stutt. I have the first two books together in one so I will go on and read the 2nd whatever the first book is like. I don't give up that easily
Come to think of it, if I had walked into a bookshop and read the first chapter and a half of Lord Foul's Bane I probably wouldn't have bought that either. Just think what I would have missed!

It can be brutal, but it's worth every step.

Agreed. Although I don't know why so many people are so down on TRS. I like it.
I like it more than FK probably. But the next three are even better.

Read up to chapter 11 last night. Brutal isn't the word for it. Leafed through to see how much more of book 1 there was and found the Afterword.
Considering I don't like watching/reading sex, violence and swearing I think I'm doing rather well. I've actually got into the story.

Good job Iolanthe!
I'm sure you are remembering who wrote this series - it's going to challenge the emotions.

TRS and FK were both good. The final three were quite possibly the best fiction I have ever read, and I don't say that lightly.

Keep going. You won't regret it.

Finished TRS. Can't believe I actually feel sorry for Angus! Perhaps he follows the "people who start out evil do not always remain evil" trend?
Reading the Afterword now.

If you feel sorry for Angus now, just wait.
It is a little strange to feel sorry for Angus, of course, based on the kind of person he is and what he does. However, the larger questions that will be asked touch on what kind of evil is taking place and its relative order of magnitude.

...and, as you will come to know, few are more qualified to make the statement above than DA Director Hashi Lebwohl.
Keep reading, and hang on for a very wild ride. All the endorsements above are spot-on. This is an incredible series, arguably Donaldson's finest work.

Exactly. I do what I do because...well, because it is what I do. I am a firm believer in "the right tool for the right job" regardless of how I have to get that tool.

Considering the events that occur in TRS, I think that's a testament to the author. Don't you?
