How weird is that - thats exactly how I pronounce it too! ( but do you say throat in the conventional way, or as 'throw-at' as do I, or does it come out as 'double decker bus' as I have heard that some people lean toward)

Here's a Haruchai girl:

This is her elementary school. (Obviously, it's not high school, where things were extreme and dangerous. They're only little kids, after all.)

Their highschools are quite different. Wanting to expose them to all the different extremes of life, they base them off of this model:

And were you their teacher of life Fist and Faith?

That would have been an apt name for the one I attended ...

Having come from the cold north mountains, I always see them as a 5.5 foot broadly built stoic nordic viking-monk type of folk.

[quote="Fist and Faith"]Here's a Haruchai girl:quote] Now there's an interesting idea - the introduction of female haruchai into the story! 8O

I have always likened the Haruchai to the great fighting men of Nepal...the Gurkhas. They have given service to the British Army for over two centuries.

a sounds like the "u" in "up"
u sounds like "oo" as in kangaroo
ai sounds like "eye"
ch as in church

hu roo ch eye

A Merry Christmas to all from the great south land (okay so it's already the 27th December but it's been a loooong celebration and vic bitter has wondrous powers to stretch time.

Same again from the UK. Discovery of the site has been a big thing to me after 30 years of being a lone Donaldson obsessive! Thanks Guys and have a great 2010 all of you. :yourock:

I talked about TCTC with another guy about 26 years ago. Some good conversations, but not enough, and I wasn't even 20 yet. Then a member here, Syl, pointed me here 7 years ago. And life was joyous. We all had so many huge discussions about so much 4-7 years ago that I don't often get too into depth now. But the old threads are still back there. heh

Still - maybe when I retire I can spend some time finding the old threads that interest me and ressurect a few of them. Sounds like (almost) heaven to me. :D

I've had the same debate with one of my friends about the appearance of a Haruchai. He thought they would look more oriental I thought they would be more African.
Spoiler
But the way I view them now is different. I relate the way a Haruchai looks in general to Esmer and in the second cover of Runes of the Earth I am certain that it is Esmer shown. So I go by that for a general reference to what a Haruchai looks like.
and I pronounce them Hah-roo-chI for Haruchai and Ran-i-hin for Ranyhyn

If you mean the one with the guy standing in a green robe with two horses behind him.......No, No, No, No, No! (But each to his own of course ;) ).

lol that's what I thought at first but you look at him and there's no other character it could be other than Esmer. The character's robes match and a big part of Esmer's character is his regard for the Ranyhyn. and Esmer was described to look mostly like his father Cail and the Haruchai
. That's how I came to that conclusion. I definitely always thought that they were African before that though

edit: sorry about that

edit: oops, forgot what forum I was in
Spoiler
I agree that it's "supposed" to be Esmer, but he looks like an adult Frodo (Elijah Wood).
