Because I can't win at them, I hate post wars.

Hence the only time I made a challenge-like post about post levels, I chose a person (F&F) who had already made it clear in another thread that it was a bit of throwaway fun for him. I'd never try to bring someone into it who I didn't know was interested!

Its when people post solely to increase their post count, that I reckon it becomes a problem. Even Brinn above, with his parade of posts, is at least doing it for topical comedy value, and hit the mark quite well cause I got a chuckle!

Glad you liked it Landwaster. Good to see my humor isn't lost on everyone! ;)
War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. I have no problem with "post wars" so long as they don't appear on other topics, and my feelings on it include even tangential kinda carrying-ons... it can get a little bit irritating trying to read about Covenant's guilt while skipping over lines about various inanities, but I have no problems skipping past topics I know that are mainly dedicated to 'em. Just because it's not fun for me doesn't mean other people can't do it, but conversely, just because it's fun for other people doesn't mean I have to see it.

Celebration topics... well, imo, I think they are a little overdone. We don't exactly need one for every person for every 1000 mark. A combined one might be a good idea.

I've seen on other boards a kind of rank system that allows special icons under a user's av for so many posts. Maybe we could set up something like that?
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

I don't think that's a good idea, Syl. I am on a forum on which such a ranking system was used. After some time and discussion, the mods and webmistress decided to do away with it because it led to an excess of meaningless posts intended only to get the poster to the next rank.

I don't personally have a problem with people celebrating "x" number of posts. I personally don't care how many posts I have, and don't bother counting.

A nice tradition that has developed at Hatrack with regard to posting landmarks: Some forum members post "landmark" posts when they reach a large number of posts, eg 1000, 2000, etc. In these posts, they share something about themselves, their lives, their families, or whatever they feel like revealing to the forum community.

The forum administrators liked the landmark thread idea so much that, after a suitable amount of time (people who want to have posted their coments, and no one has added to the thread for a while), they move the landmark thread to an archive "read only" forum.

Here is the thread in which Kristine Card announces the archiving of landmark threads.

you can check out some of our landmark threads.

(No, I haven't done one, but Foamy has - she's JaneX, and Shlomo has, for those of you who know him.)

That sounds pretty cool, MM. I am also familiar with rankings, but they're okay where I've been.

gottah remember that most of the best TC discussion on these boards tends to stem from a tangential digression built off another relevant topic.

For example, I think a whole conversation about what guilt really meant re TC etc, actually grew from a thread about the Oath of Peace.

I ask in another thread about where Earthpower's power begins and ends, and on it we learn that although we often think its the case, there's nothing to say that the Land of the Olohim is an island.

So I certainly can't agree with your stance on 'tangential carry-ons'.

I guess it depends on the maturity of the posters, Mhoram. On the board at which I saw rankings used, maturity was lacking in some.

I still don't think irankings are a good idea, though. If WGDs lead to excess posting just to acquire more WGDs, ranking might lead to the same sort of activity.

I'm yet to see any excessive posting. Closest thing to excessive posting is seen in the game threads in the Hall Of Gifts, on threads where a fairly high rate of posting is required to effectively contribute.

I like that link of MsMary's -- that a good idea.

I don't think anyone has a problem so much with digressions as long as they are still related to the subject (like a TC digression in TC). I get the feeling from reading through this thread that its when they go way off subject too often that people get bugged. (shrugs) :2c:

Geez, it has to be at least 18. ;)

As far as what I meant about the tangents... imo, it's all good as long as it stays TC related and in a similar... mood, I guess... as the original post. I'm not talking black and white, either. Tons of grey. It's just a matter of discretion.

About rank... I'm not sure we're talking about the same thing. I don't mean elevating anybody's status or anything. What I'm talking about is just a little icon under the avatar. I don't think it's any more significant than the post count or WGD amount. But instead of there being a celebration thread every x amount of posts (usually involving at least two zeros)... dunno, just an idea. If I remember correctly, there's a fairly well described marking system for the Warward....

I generally don't mind too much about how many times I've posted, obviously if you look at my post count compared to how long I have been here.

It does get annoying when you are trying to have a really interesting conversation and random posts about nothing pop up. I'm not talking about how people can wander off topic every now and then, but just posts that have absolutely nothing to do with either the topic of the thread, or the topic of conversation at the time.

I have been posting a lot more lately, as Landwaster can probably tell you, and I have noticed it more so I thought i would share my humble opinion.
