I think it is pretty clear from the books that most acts of good cause negative consequences. and that good is easily corrupted to despair's ends.

So good acts only lead to bad things? That's kind of a downer thing to take away from the Chronicles.

I think that the Despiser can twist things so that good acts lead to negative consequences. But I don't think that that is the normal outcome if the Despiser is not influencing.

Hile Troy was already discussed, but I just want to add him as an example of this: his drive to carry out his plans post KW in TIW was borne of the fear of guilt that he would suffer should he fail (and, in his eyes, betray) the land.

Power always causes some harm. So power, in essence, creates guilt, just by having it.
Ex.
Money is power. So, people who get a big inheritance have power, right? Yet they're guilty of putting themselves above others, simply because they are rich, while others starve. Hence, power=guilt.
