Ok I'm going to take the silence as need for another hint. :)

The protagonist has lost weight of course, because he has just received a gunshot wound. There, that should make it positively simple now :)

Damn, you people are good  The silent treatment works, I can tell you - I just have to give another clue now!

It's Stephen Donaldson. Now get guessing!!

I will hazard a guess: The Man Who Fought Alone.

This is my first time here so I don't really know the rules. Lazy Hashi.

Incorrect Hashi, but thanks for playing!

The rules are very simple: the first sentence of a book is the clue, and you need to guess the book it is associated with.

Since it is an SRD book, the answer should come quite easily now, even if it is a guess.

The eastern stars were paling to the dawn as Lessingham followed his conductor along the grass walk between the shadowy ranks of Irish yews, that stood like soldiers mysterious and expectant in the darkness.

Without looking, that reminds me somehow of The Thirty-Nine Steps.

"One thing sure," Beatrice said wryly as she wrapped the squalling, wriggling baby tightly into the fine cotton sheet his mother had woven for just this moment, "he's got your lungs, Petiron. Here! I've got to make Merelan more comfortable now."

Didn't need the hint, just needed the quote bumped so I noticed it. Menolly never comes to this forum, but she has assuredly made me aware of these books.
